Statement english: The 6 Series is in essence a Gran Turismo which is a vehicle that combines sportiness and elegance. It is a sports car that actually allows you to drive fast but also longer distances. It is a vehicle that you can travel with. It allows you to do all these things in style. Statement english: The design process at BMW is always a design competition. That means we brief the design team on the character of the car, the way we see it, and then we start a sketch competition at first. The design team creates hundreds of sketches. From these sketches we select the most promising ones, the ones we feel express the vehicle character the most and we build models. First scale models, then full size models of these designs. Once we build full size models we, of course, think about aerodynamics, we are testing aerodynamics and cooperate that into the design. We think about how to make and produce this car, we think about what materials we want to use. Then it gets a little more complex and also extremely interesting and exciting. From these full size models together with the Board of Management we then select one exterior design and one interior design and of course those get developped further, another two years of technical development then leads to the final product, to the production car. All in all it takes three years to go from the empty sheet of paper to the first prototype coming off the production line. But it all happens in a competition and the designer whose sketch is selected, of course, is very, very happy and usually in the end result the designer can still recognise then the character that was created in the first sketches. Statement english: At the beginning of the process of any new car development the goal is always to top the predecessor, both in looks and market success. That goal is easily described but, of course, not so easy to meet. I believe in terms of design we have been able to make the proportions better. The car is little bit wider, a little bit lower and a little bit longer than the predecessor. This helps, increases elegance and sportiness. And in the design, I believe, the car is a perfect combination of these two elements, sportiness and elegance. The surface is emotional, the car looks muscular without being overly aggressive. So I believe it perfectly fulfills the brief of a Gran Turismo: a car meant to be driven in a sporty way, but also a car with which you can make a weekend or weeklong trip across the Alps. Statement english: Compared to previous generations of 6 Series I believe the new car immediately shows more sportiness, for instance in the front end. If you look at the front of the car you immediately notice that it looks wide, the kidneys are placed lower in the car than ever before, the kidney shape itself is wider than for instance at the 5 Series. Same is true in the rear. The rear lamps are extremely low and wide, we have a very strong shoulder on the car and very strong wheel arches. So all of this is an expression of sportiness. And elegance I believe is strengthend if you look at the side view for instance at the car. The car looks more stretched than the predecessor, the wheelbase is longer and the roof line certainly in the Cabrio version with the top up is extremely elegant through this finn-type soft top.
