O-Ton Manrique in Werkstatt über den Sinn des Automobils: “If I wonder what the purpose of a car is, my first answer is that it serves fast transport. And when I think of speed, my first thought is of a bird, a butterfly, a dragonfly. Thus, I wanted to design the BMW in such a way that it appeared to float through space without any resistance whatsoever.”Art Car wird lackiert, Gegenschnitte Naturaufnahmen: Manrique über den Einfluss von Farbe und Materie auf sein Werk“In my whole career as a painter, colour has always been of paramount importance – just like matter. This is because of the volcanic landscape of Lanzarote. The colours I like best are: the black of the volcanic ash; red, just like the national park Timanfaya – when the sun beams, and colours are particularly bright; and the red of the volcanic fire. But also pure white, which can be found in the traditional architecture of the island.”
Manrique über seine Kindheit: “I was born in Arècife, Lanzarote, close to the coastline. In my childhood I was fascinated by the experience of the summertime, which I spent in a little village in the north of Lanzarote on the coast. There, I played at the beach very often. I drew sketches and built sculptures, did a lot of sports, watched the birds and the little fish – and at night, I would watch the stars. To me, this was a never-ending spectacle, I was constantly in awe of the wealth of nature.”Manrique über Geographie und Astronomie: “When I learned about geography and astronomy as a child, I was fascinated to know that we were living on a ball revolving around the sun – that star which lights up the whole planetary system. At the time, I developed the strong will and the awareness to genuinely feel that I was floating through space on that ball.” Manrique über seine Malerei: My painting is influenced by everything on earth – the insects, the sea and the water…by all the elements.” Manrique über das Vergnügen seiner Arbeit: “My greatest joy in life is to get up in the morning, put on my working suit and go over to my studio. There, I’ll find four or five paintings, two or three collages, sculpture designs…I move from one to the other and continue working on them.” Manrique über den Geist der Jugend: Often, I feel like a little child – especially when I spend all day in my studio and create things as if I’m just playing around. I always feel the spirit of youth and the ability to use my imagination and my creative powers.” Manrique über die Anziehung aller künstlerischen Bereiche: “I’m attracted by all aspects of art…such as sculpture, poetry and literature. Architecture has always moved me. Take for example “Jameos del Agua”. That’s where I created a universe and a microcosm for myself.” Manrique über Lanzarote: “For centuries, Lanzarote was completely unknown and led a Cinderella existence amongst the Canary Islands. People laughed and said all that Lanzarote had to offer was camels and stones. I wanted to refute that claim and thus designed things which would make people see the great graphic power and the beauty of the island. For that reason, I created pieces such as “Jameos del Agua”, “Mirador del Rio” or “El Amacen”, to name but a few.” Manrique über seine Mobilés: “My mobiles have been influenced by the “Alicias del Atlantico”, the eternal winds on the island. They gave me the idea to create sculptures that this wind could play with.” Manrique über die Einordnung als Gärtner: “People tried to categorize me as an artist, even describing me as a gardener. I feel honoured. In my opinion, being a gardener is a truly wonderful profession. Being an artist is no profession. You are born that way. To me, painting is the essence of my life.”
