Question: What does today at BMW Welt mean to you?A topping-out ceremony is reason enough for any architect to be pleased, since the building is finally released from the shackles of its foundations so to speak, and one has an idea just how big and how magnificent it will look when it is finished. But it is also a reason to be proud, especially in the case of this particular building, because it sets new standards, new standards in terms of content, design and size. In terms of content due to the fact that it will be a synergetic building where there will not only be cars to be seen, but also restaurants, galleries and exhibitions to be enjoyed. It will be an enormous marketplace featuring a theatre stage. So it is an entirely new functional concept. Question: What will it be like when it’s finished? It will be colossal. Just imagine, the roof of the building could cover the entire St. Mark’s Square in Venice, but it is held by only eleven supports. If you consider that Greek temples 2500 years ago required 36 supports for a building one tenth of the size, then you will get some idea of what has been achieved with this construction. Question: How does a creative person approach a client who himself is consistently in search of perfection in design?Well, you cannot separate a client from the commissioned architect. There are no excuses for either of them. In this case in particular, it is tremendously important that both should work together, since the building aims at setting new standards, and because there are innovations involved that should be implemented jointly.

Question: How important is architecture to BMW?Many of our employees are actively involved in the development of corporate architecture. Architecture and design are also management issues. All of our executives are consistently preoccupied with shape and form when they design cars or make decisions on them. And of course, we at Real Estate and Facility Management have our own team of architects, we create styles, make proposals in collaboration with our colleagues from the marketing department and endeavour to develop our very own language. It is not our wish that individual star architects in particular should put themselves in the foreground, but are consistently preoccupied with BMW, with its values, with the brand, and at the end of the day we aspire to make our buildings typical BMW buildings. We endeavour to create space in which our customers, our suppliers and all those interested in the BMW brand may work and experience the company at first hand.Question: What is BMW’s vision? The great vision behind all this is that when you enter a building anywhere in the world, I would want you to be able to recognize it as being a BMW building, even if the three letters are not visible from the outside. When we have achieved this, then we will have realized our architectural competence, our aspirations to form and design.

Question: What were your feelings at the construction site today? The feeling I associate with the topping-out ceremony is that the vision has become reality: The vision the project team involved in the designing of this building had when it took part in the architecture competition, but also the visions we had when drawing up all those concepts for the BMW Welt. Whilst this architecture did indeed provide us with a kind of monument, it did not mean that we knew immediately how BMW Welt would function and how its function would actually transform into images – images which at this particular time surely exist only in our minds, but which will most certainly be realized within the next 18 months. Question: What demands is the company placing on BMW Welt? With BMW Welt our company is fulfilling a premium requirement for the BMW brand by providing it with an architectural symbol that projects the product and the entire brand competence. If you so wish, we are literally transforming the slogan “driving pleasure” into a three-dimensional object, since, at BMW Welt, you will indeed be able to experience everything that is synonymous with driving pleasure.
