Richmond Hill, ON.  Native Montrealer and BMW factory works driver Bruno Spengler has been inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame.  At 36 years of age, Spengler was the youngest inductee of the year.  He was also the driver who began his racing career at the youngest age. He began competing at age eight, and his first official race was a kart race at Biesheim in 1993.  Spengler showed his potential early on, achieving his first victory the following year.

Since then, Spengler has raced in the Forumula Renault Eurocup and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM).  He  initially drove for Mercedes in the DTM between 2005 and 2011, during which time he twice finished runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship. When BMW returned to the series in 2012, he switched manufacturers and promptly won the title at the first attempt in a dramatic season. During his DTM career, Spengler won 16 races, secured pole position 18 times, and made it onto the podium 51 times. In total, he amassed 1,024 points.

At the end of 2019, Spengler transitioned to the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.  As well as performing on BMW Team RLL in the BMW M8 GTE, Spengler also acts as a reserve and test driver for BMW i Andretti Motorsport in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

To be inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame, inductees must still be actively involved in motorsport – in Spengler’s case, he’s still racing – and their career must span 25 years or more, a condition Spengler meets despite his young age.

“Bruno Spengler was inducted into the Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding successes, all of which have contributed to enhancing the profile and image of motorsport in Canada,” said Dr. Hugh Scully, Chair, Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame.  “Bruno is an inspiring model for young Canadian men and women who wish to become active in motorsport at a young age.”

The induction ceremony took place as part of the Canadian International Auto Show on Saturday, February 15th, 2020.
