Detroit/Munich.

The BMW Group ended the year 2000 with a new sales record for BMW cars.
Altogether, more than 822,000 vehicles were supplied to customers worldwide,
which represents an increase of 9.4 percent over the previous year (751,272).
This was announced by Professor Dr.-Ing. Joachim Milberg, Chairman of the Board
of Management of BMW AG, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS)
in Detroit. In December 2000 alone, almost 70,000 of the cars with the famous
blue and white badge were sold. This is 13.7 percent more than in December 1999
and is the best December result of all time. Sales records in many different
markets throughout the world have contributed to this extraordinary success.

Professor Dr.-Ing. Joachim Milberg made the following comment at today's BMW
press conference in Detroit: "These sales figures are clear proof of the
reputation enjoyed by our products, the variety of our model range - and thus
the success of our premium brand strategy".

The ten biggest BMW sales markets in the year 2000 were (in order of sales
volume). Germany with approx. 240,600 vehicles (an increase of 0.2 percent over
the previous year), USA with 189,423 vehicles (plus 22 percent), United Kingdom
with approx. 68,300 (minus 3 percent), Italy with approx. 43,900 (plus 10
percent), Japan with approx. 35,900 (plus 2 percent), France with approx.
33,900 (plus 7 percent), Spain with approx. 27,600 (plus 18 percent), Belgium
with approx. 22,400 (plus 19 percent), South Africa with approx. 16,200 (plus
13 percent) and Netherlands with approx. 14,500 vehicles (an increase of 5
percent over the previous year).

In its home market of Germany, BMW ended the year 2000 with the highest market
share of all time: according to the reliable December estimates, around 238,000
BMW vehicles were registered in Germany over the last twelve months -
corresponding to a market share of 7.0% (after 6.2% in the previous year). Once
again, the group was thus able to increase registrations over the previous year
despite the general negative trend (minus around ten percent) recorded by the
market as a whole.

In the USA - BMW's most important market abroad - deliveries to customers
increased by about a quarter to 189,423 vehicles (previous year: 154,970). The
X5 Sports Activity Vehicle and the 3 series played a particularly important
part in this success. It was pleasing to note that sales of the 5 series also
grew. BMW sales in the USA have almost doubled over the last five years.

These outstanding sales successes were also reflected in the increased
profitability of the company. The BMW Group achieved better results than ever
before in terms of both turnover and profit-sales ratio.

Worldwide sales of BMW motorcycles also set new records. Altogether, around
74,500 BMW motorcycles were sold in the year 2000, representing an increase of
over 14 percent over the previous year (65,168 units). Sales showed a clear
increase in the two most important markets - Germany, with an increase of 6
percent to approx. 23,400 motorcycles (previous year: 22,211) and the USA, with
an increase of 19 percent to approx. 12,000 motorcycles (previous year:
10,088).
