The interior of the sedan, which could accommodate four occupants, was very much in keeping with the style of the times. The wipers were fitted at the top so the windscreen could be pivoted outwards at the bottom by turning a handle.

A touring car version with its lightweight softtop open. This roof had the advantage of being extremely unobtrusive when folded down – just the ticket for fine-weather motoring.

The same touring car with the softtop closed and the detachable side windows in place. These, it must be said, were less than ideal and could easily get scratched when not in use. Customers could, however, order windows operated by a winder, plus a more elaborately padded softtop.

Six lively but unusually small pistons were the driving force behind the BMW 303’s engine. Its torque and smoothness were superb.

The BMW 303 was available in various body versions. This is the roll-up-roof sedan.

The BMW stand at the 1933 Geneva Motor Show. Body specialists such as Gläser created sporty two-seater versions of the car.

Six cylinders, two carburettors, a displacement of only 1173cc: these were history-making numbers.

A strong tubular steel chassis with transverse leaf spring at the front. This arrangement provided the basis for a wide range of bodies.

The BMW 303 was extremely ambitious in terms of engineering. Its six-cylinder engine was exceptional for its class. And with a two-tone paint finish, as shown here, it cut a particularly handsome and exclusive figure.
