Question: What does sustainability means for BMW? Answer: „We take on responsibility from conviction and also because it is in our own interest to do so. Because corporate sustainability in our commitment to society is an important factor to secure our own future.” Question: How important is sustainability for BMW? Answer: “BMW Groups board of management declared sustainability as one of the companies’ core strategic principles already back in the year 2000. With developing our sustainability strategy in 2009 further we enhanced our sustainability efforts and established sustainability as group wide corporate target. At the highest management level the sustainability board was established in summer 2009. Now each and every proposal today is measured against the corporate goal of sustainability. We have achieved a lot but there is still a lot to do.” Question: What are the next steps? Answer: “The Company has decided to forge ahead and developing efficient drive technologies and to implement sustainable mobility concepts for urban centres. As for the production process the goal is to further reduce the consumption of resources and to minimise environmental impacts. As an attractive employer the BMW Group aims to strengthen employee’s motivation and satisfaction. It is also vital for us to integrate ecological and social standards in our whole supply chain.” Chart “Sustainability in the life cycle of a BMW Group vehicle”.

Frankfurt Motor Show 2009 poster. BMW Exhibition hall. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, presenting MINI E and BMW ActiveHybrid 7: „The MINI E in its look alone is exactly the opposite of the BMW seven series a small car through witch we can achieve a lot. This proves that climate protection also makes fun.” “We therefore think it’s our task to find a good balance of ecological requirements on the one hand and attractive products at the other. It’s definite that no other electric car has covered more miles, more kilometres then MINI E. And the experience of our customers of the MINI E – Ladies and Gentlemen – we are using for our mega city vehicle. As you already know this car will enter the markets as a sub brand of BMW. (Translation) 2009 Auto Shanghai exterior shot of exhibition hall, MINI exhibition booth. Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management BMW AG, Sales and Marketing: „This is a fully electric powered vehicle, produces zero emissions and which is especially ideal - I think - for driving in mega cities. Now the MINI E is the first result of project we call “Project I”: a group within the BMW company that is actually looking to develop solutions for sustainable mobility. And as part of that project there are now 500 MINI E vehicles being tested in every day urban driving in the US, Germany and soon in UK. And our costumer feedback will assist us in gaining valuable experience and knowhow on the actual use of electric power vehicles.” Presentation of project „MINI E Berlin – powered by Vattenfall“, November 2008. Geoff Hoon, Secretary of State for Transport and Lord Peter Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, driving MINI E on test track. Lord Peter Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform: “It’s a great car, it’s a driving sensation. I mean it’s not only very comfortable and speedy - it’s so quiet, you know, it just doesn’t intrude. It just goes and that’s great.” “Well, we want to see the MINI E, amongst others, coming forward and demonstrating the appeal, the value of electric cars to the British consumer.” Several driving scenes downtown London.

CEP (CleanEnergy Partnership) TOTAL filling station in Berlin. The car is filled with a user-friendly hydrogen nozzle. Animation: After locking the nozzle, the fuelling line is released for filling. Liquefied hydrogen sprays into the tank. Inside the tank, a layer of gaseous hydrogen can always be found on top of the liquefied hydrogen. When the car starts, the engine is supplied with gaseous hydrogen. Animation: Gaseous hydrogen flows at ambient temperature into the H2 engine. In the intake manifold, the gaseous hydrogen is mixed with oxygen from the air. In the H2 combustion engine, this mixture is burnt and converted directly into mechanical energy. The combustion of hydrogen and oxygen produces water vapour. Water vapour flows through the exhaust system. Water vapour emerges. The cycle "water-hydrogen-water" is complete.

Sitlls: exterior design. Stills: interior design. Animation Vision EfficientDynamics. Animation oft he driving functions of Vision ED. As soon as the vehicle starts, electric energy flows from the battery to the two electric motors on the front and rear axles via the engine management system. The transmission and wheels transfer the energy to the road. As part of the brake energy regeneration system, the kinetic energy generated when braking or travelling downhill is used to charge the battery. When driving on the motorway, the vehicle is primarily powered by the highly efficient diesel engine and the double-clutch transmission on the rear axle. A thermoelectric generator uses the lost heat from the exhaust system as an addition source of energy regeneration and channels the electric energy to the battery via the electric motors. On open roads or at higher speeds the vehicle is predominantly powered by the efficient 1.5 litre three-cylinder turbo engine with variable turbine geometry. The double-clutch transmission provides the power delivery. For maximum acceleration – for example when overtaking – the three power sources work together to increase a system performance to up to 262 kW (356 hp) an 800 Nm torque. Statement Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design: "The body is made of carbon fibre and the chassis is made in aluminum, so we’ve taken great care to reduce the weight by these materials. This is the perfect combination of emotion, driving pleasure and efficiency.” “We actually managed together with our engineers to build a vehicle that is purely designed with efficient dynamics in mind, but the end result is something highly emotional and appealing – I believe - to the eye.”

Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG: „We are convinced at any rate that individual mobility has a great future and we will continue to make our contribution to this future.” (Translation) Chancellor Angela Merkel at IAA 2009, September 2009. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, welcomes Chancellor Merkel at BMW IAA booth. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany: “I am glad to be here. As I heard, you choose the most up to date exhibition hall to present your modern cars. I want to say at the outset, that BMW reached probably the best quantum leaps in developing fuel efficient engines. I say this quite deliberately, because sometimes I commend other cars, I now commend to explicitly BMW and its engine technology.” (Translation) N. Reithofer thanked for the praise and introduced the BMW 320d to the chancellor Merkel, pointing out its low fuel consumption. „Zeit Konferenz IAA 2009“ Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG: "What is my answer to the future? I say, the car needs to evolve, I fully agree with what Joschka Fischer said before: the cars must evolve through innovation. If I once jump into the year 2020, we must drive three paths side by side: the engines have to be much more efficient, we need to perform a hybridization of our vehicles and we will start in a part with electric mobility. Then, for the next 15-20 years the car will have a future. But we have to do.” (Translation) Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG: "For the BMW Group, in terms of progression we have made most advances to reduce the consumption of CO2 and fuel consumption in the German automotive industry. We continue, because we believe, this is the only way to bring our company on a trendsetting path.” (Translation) Joschka Fischer, retired Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs: "I think that we or that the car industry in its own self preservation concern will think and act more revolutionary in the coming years, too. Because it is this industry that has the possibilities of technique - and I do not think that we say goodbye to individual mobility - but we will define a different individual mobility, define increasingly different. This will have consequences, in my opinion, concerning the owner’s relationship to its car. That will be another form of automobile, with much more functionality and passion as well as functionality. Passion will be used in a given segment, but in other segments not at all. With E-mobility a fascinating process is in the offing, which not only covers the automotive industry. The question of transition from the combustion engine to electric motor will bring a massive infrastructural change. This means a transformation of the oil industry (one of the most important industrial factors) to the electricity industry. That is no small matter. (Translation)

Main gate BMW Plant Rosslyn. BMW 3series Assembly line. Health centre Rosslyn plant. Dr. Natalie Mayet, General Manager Health and Occupational Medicine, BMW Plant Rosslyn. “Our strategy is to prevent any new infection, to make sure that those who are infected live a healthy life, well und productive as long as possible; for us to minimize the impact of the epidemic on the individual and the family and the peasants. And for us to ensure the sustainability of the workforce. So that is in essence our strategy – is to ensure people’s live healthy well as long as possible and prevent new infections. “ „There are people who are to ill to work, we have a very structured program, and the most important part of these structured programs is to giving people a sense of worth: “You are to ill to work now, but you work with us and you’re coming back!” And we have done this quit successfully with people who’ve gone in this program, they have been treated, we described the exercise, one of our nurses going on home visits, so she supports the individuals while there at home and we try as far as possible to bring people back as soon as they are healthy and well to come back to work. And we are successfully - are doing that successfully at the moment.” „In terms of legal compliance we need to insure that everybody is fit to take on the responsibility of there job and to meet the functional requirements of there position. So from a legal compliance, yes that’s imperative. But these people are employed and continued and they have the choice to go to there own doctors or to come to us.” “The first thing we try to do is to prevent new infections, so we have a number of programs on site that promote prevention. So the peer educated program: We are peers who encourages safer sexual practises. We promote financial well being, so our economic drivers don’t drive risky behaviour. We promote condom utilisation. We have woman’s forums that empower women to deal with conflict, to negotiate in terms of safer sexual practises. So that’s one component, it’s a preventions component. The second then is your diagnosis, so your testing campaign and your treatment can support if someone is HIV positive.” “We have a 7.8 percent positivity rate currently in BMW. It’s lower then national average in terms what we know – certainly every HIV infection is one too much.”

Several shots LoveLife Project Langa/Cape Town. David Harrison, CEO LoveLife South Africa: “Work against Aids cannot be in isolation. The same facts that drive HIV infection, drive crime, and drive social abuse, and a lot of that is to do with the sense of social exclusion and marginalisation, that is happen in South Africa. We are in a township which is traditionally a black township, much poorer than white communities one kilometre away. And that sense of being a nobody in a sea of wealth is a very, very difficult concept for black South Africans.” David Harrison, CEO LoveLife South Africa: “Organisations, Institutions, Cooperates like BMW, that have come into South Africa or making a positive contribution to economic growth. But it’s great to see them extend beyond their employees into communities were they really can make a difference.” Township passing. BMW South Africa LoveLife Y-Centre Knysna. Animation and dance show. Nomawethu Mweli – LoveLife Regional Coordinator: “Because, you also have a clinic in site, and they think if they are coming there are going to test, and they are afraid of the test. I don’t know why. Because, if we ask them, they say we going ill more and more.” Knysna – Township „White Location”. Contrast poor/rich – black/white. Knysna Chris Nissan Primary School. Class.
