Detroit, January 16, 2018.- The jury of the Inter-American Federation of Automotive Journalists (FIPA, for its initials in Spanish) awarded the “Car of the Year 2018” to the all new seventh generation BMW 5 Series within the frame of the NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) 2018 activities.

The FIPA is an organization founded in 2001 which gathers automotive specialized journalists with representatives from the whole American continent from the United States to South America, including the Caribbean countries. Among the purposes of its activities, they want to recognize the major actors of the automotive industry with annual awards.

Bernhard Kunht, President and CEO for BMW Group North America, and Vladimir Mello, Head of Corporate Communication for BMW Group Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean received the award from the FIPA’s representatives. “We are grateful for this award from the FIPA to the latest generation of the BMW 5 Series, the executive sedan that has set new sportiveness standards, technological leadership, digitalization and remote services for vehicles”, Vladimir Mello said.

The all new seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series sets new sportiveness standards, technological leadership, digitalization and remote services. The BMW sedan experiences an increased driving dynamism, a high level of assistance systems together with an unmatched network integration level and a new and innovative control system which define the major developments for the model. On the other hand, the integration of aluminum and highly resistant alloys, as well as the light-weight design named BMW EfficientLightweight, and the new suspension with a lower gravity center and a highly torque-resistant body reduced the weight of the car by 100 kilograms.

It also includes the Remote Parking function which may be remotely controlled by the BMW Display Key and it may maneuver in highly reduced parking spots without requiring the driver to be inside the vehicle. In addition to this, Smartphone integration was even more optimized, not only with Bluetooth and wireless charge functions, but also this is the first time BMW includes Apple CarPlay in one of its models and its is also completely wirelessly integrated for the first time by a motor vehicle manufacturer.

BMW has received other awards such as “Car of the year” from the FIPA in previous years: the BMW 7 Series in 2016; the BMW M4 Coupe in 2015; the BMW 5 Series in 2004; and the BMW M3 in 2002 (the very first award given by this federation). Thus, this is its fifth award from FIPA to BMW, now given to the all new seven generation BMW 5 Series in 2018.
