How is working the emergency braking for pedestrians?„How often does it happen, that suddenly a pedestrian is appearing somewhere in front of a vehicle. Normally the driver can handle this situation by braking or by swinging out. But it may happen, that he is not reacting at all. It’s too late to react for him. The vehicle can handle this situation. Through the sensor system installed in the vehicle, which since a long time has recognized the pedestrian, it will be possible in future to detect the situation where the driver is no longer able to handle it. And the vehicle by itself will initiate the braking.”Is the driver still obligated to brake by himself then?“There is no need to say, that the entire topic of vehicle guidance remains with the driver.That the vehicle will just take a initiative in real real extremous traffic situations.“

Could you explain the new intersection assistant and traffic light assistant and what are the customer’s benefits?„It is well known from traffic accident statistics that a lot of accidents do occur in the intersection area. This is quite obvious, because sometimes the traffic situation is confusing. Just to give you an example: Two vehicles are approaching from different directions in this intersections. Maybe they even don’t see each other, they do not know who has priority.But we can detect that this two vehicles are approaching this intersection, that is a large chance that they will meet in this intersection points. Due to the direct wireless car-to-car communication possibilities we have we can exchange data between this two vehicles and inform the drivers in time that some time later they will be engaged in a dangerous situation and we can tell them to reduce the speed.“

What exactly ist the „wrong-way” driver information and how does it work?„The topic of wrong-way drivers is well known. What is happening? The driver is accessing a highway via the exit ramp and suddenly he is on the wrong site of the lane in wrong direction. This occurse quite often. In Germany as an example we know on average six times a day. And the accidents occuring on the highway are terrible because, when two cars are hidding each other going in opposite directions the relative speed between these vehicles is enormous. We can’t count the acces because we can detect even the driver is going to the wrong direction because we can detect the path of the vehicle. Use to navigation and GPS systems we have installed on board, we can immediately detect that he is going into wrong direction. And this alouds us to inform the driver immediately that something is not correct.In the second step we also can send this information to all vehicles around the critical vehicle by wireless communication, direct communication between vehicle to vehicle and inform, here is my position. At this position I’m going into the wrong direction. Please reduce your speed.“

What does corner information system mean and what´s the advantage for the driver?„Just imagine the following scenario: a driving vehicle is driving on secondary roads and suddenly he encounters a sharp turn after passing the turn he may say, if I had known before I would have reduced my speed. I was too fast. We can recommend a driving speed for pasing terms to the driver. We have a lot of information about this turns. We can detemine the radius of curvature of each turn. And the arrive their prom recommended speed we can pass in time to the driver and so we can avoid to enter a turn at too high speed. We are orienting all of our work in the driver assistance and active safety area.” How did you get to these innovations?“All the information that we have from accident statistics we know which type of accidents are happening and why these accidents did occur. Accordingly we will focus everything on developing systems which will significantly contribute to reduce the traffic accident situation.”When will they be available for the customers?“There is no need to say, that all systems developed within BMW Group Research and Technology have a research character But it’s our job to further develop this systems so that in one time this systems they can go into series production.“
