Richmond Hill, ON. The August 20/21 weekend marked history for the BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike team, with Brett McCormick earning BMW the Parts Canada Superbike Championship crown on Saturday, while Matt McBride, Francis Martin and Andrew Nelson rode their privately-enterd BMW S1000RRs to podium finishes during the doubleheader weekend concluding the 2011 CSBK series.
McCormick’s BMW factory teammate, Michael Ferreira, led Sunday’s final round race early on however a flat front tire caused him to crash entering turn 5. Unhurt, Ferreira remounted and managed to bring his radX/BMW home in 5th place. Hot on the heels of the podium finishers, Andrew Nelson rode to a 4th-place finish on Sunday after completing the podium in 3rd the previous day on his privately-entered BMW S1000RR, while McCormick’s BMW factory teammate Mike Ferreira rounded up the BMW onslaught right behind him in 5th-place.
The overall CSBK Championship results also reverberated with the largest roster of BMW top-ten finishes in the history of the series, all on S1000RRs:
1st - Brett McCormick
3rd – Andrew Nelson
4th – Mike Ferreira
7th – Francis Martin
9th – Matt McBride
10th – Rob Busby
BMW Motorrad Canada was also honoured with the Canadian Superbike Championship “Team of the Year” award, sponsored by Inside Motorcycles.
With a near-perfect season, winning every race in the series except the final, Brett McCormick battled furiously with his series rival Jordan Szoke throughout the CSBK schedule to secure the well-earned win and provide spectators with one of the mostly hotly-contested series to date.
Having set a new lap record of 1 minute 20.8 seconds on Friday, McCormick, continued his assault on Sunday, finally challenging the ultimate race winner Jordan Szoke for the lead entering the first corner of the final lap, but unfortunately crashing in the process.
Chris Duff, Marketing and race team manager for BMW Motorrad Canada summed up the feelings of the radX/BMW Motorrad Canada Superbike Team on the season’s results, stating “ our primary goal was to win the championship this year because we knew we had the package to do it, however winning six straight races was an unexpected bonus and a testament to the amazing capabilities of the BMW S1000RR.”
