Stevens Selected by Popular Vote in National Online Competition, Completing Roster of Eleven Elite Athletes

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – Sept. 23, 2011…BMW, the Official Mobility Partner of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), has added cyclist Evelyn Stevens to the BMW Performance Team, an elite group of Olympic and Paralympic athletes who hope to compete at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In the lead up to the London 2012 Games, Stevens will receive financial support as well as access to BMW resources and technologies as she trains and competes to qualify for a berth on the U.S. Olympic Cycling Team.

Stevens joins the team by popular vote. BMW invited Americans to cast their vote online to select one of three Olympic hopefuls to become the last member of the BMW Performance Team. Henry Cejudo (wrestling) and Ursula Grobler (rowing) also competed for the slot, which asked participants to view video testimonials from each athlete at www.bmwusa.com/teamusa before voting for the athlete they felt most deserved to be a part of the team. With her unique personal story of a transition from Wall St. to competitive cycling at the age of 25 and dogged determination, Stevens earned more than 50 percent of the popular vote. A relative newcomer to the sport of competitive cycling, Stevens has captured the attention of the cycling world winning races including the Fitchburg Classic, the Cascade Classic and a stage at the Route de France.

“As a female competing in a sport in which funding is notoriously difficult to obtain, I’m so grateful to become a member of the BMW Performance Team,” said Stevens. “To know that I have my peers to thank for rewarding my passion and drive for competitive cycling with their vote makes this even more of an honor.”

“We are so proud of all three of these talented and committed athletes, and our congratulations go to each of them as they continue to reach for their Olympic dreams,” said Trudy Hardy, Manager, BMW Marketing Communications and Consumer Events, BMW of North America. “We are also happy to have had the opportunity to empower our passionate BMW community to select the final member of our team, and look forward to witnessing together the future successes of Team USA.”

Other members of the BMW Performance Team include Ricky Berens (swimming), Matt Chrabot (triathlon), Bryan Clay (track & field), Natalie Coughlin (swimming), Janet Evans (swimming), April Holmes (Paralympic track & field), Jonathan Horton (gymnastics), Clay Johnson (sailing), Sanya Richards-Ross (track & field), and Mallory Weggemann (Paralympic swimming).

BMW has a long standing, global commitment to performance-driven sports and looks forward to fueling the athletic performance of Team USA through 2016.  In the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, BMW will apply its resources and technologies to advance the training and performance goals of the Olympic and Paralympic athletes of Team USA.
