Guide Represents First-Ever Global Overview of Top Private and Publicly Accessible Art Collections

 

Miami, FL – BMW today announced that North American launch of “The BMW Art Guide by Independent Collectors,” a joint publication by BMW and the Independent Collectors, an online network for collectors of contemporary art. The company will use this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach as the platform for its North American launch.

 

The lavishly illustrated volume, produced by the preeminent art-book publisher Hatje Cantz, will take readers on a tour of over 30 countries to explore the 173 most important contemporary art collections in the world, including such highlights as Sammlung Boros (Germany), the Devi Art Foundation (India) and the Hess Art Collection (Argentina, South, Africa, USA.) Concise portraits of each collection will accompany vibrant images of master art works at the different locations.

 

The “BMW Art Guide for Independent Collectors” represents BMW’s first joint publication with Independent Collectors, opening a new chapter in a partnership dating back to 2009. The book includes portraits of 173 art collections, both private and publicly accessible. A prestigious network of collectors, galleriests, artists and journalists collaborated on the research and image compilation that went into this groundbreaking work. No other such portfolio of the world’s great contemporary art collections exists, either in book form or in a digital format, and a number of the collections displayed in the guide are opening their doors to art lovers and connoisseurs for the first time.

 

“This project is a true milestone for our Independent Collectors platform,” said Christian Schwarm, founder of Independent Collectors. “Until now, all our activities have been online, where we’ve sought to present private collections digitally and interact with art lovers and collectors around the world. It’s wonderful to see the vast network of relationships we’ve built up since our founding in 2008 find expression as a beautiful object in its own right.”

 

BMW has been a partner of Art Basel Miami Beach for many years, in addition to Art Basel in Basel and soon Hong Kong. BMW will again provide the official VIP shuttle service for visitors to the show. The vehicles will ensure a seamless linkage between the various event locations and show venues.

 

Three of the legendary BMW Art Cars will be exhibited in Miami in a special pavilion in the Botanical Gardens next to the fair. In addition to the vehicles that Frank Stella and Alexander Calder created in the 1970s, Robert Rauschenberg’s “rolling sculpture” from 1986 will also be on display. A fourth car, the BMW Art Car by Jenny Holzer from 1999, will be exhibited in the Art Collectors Lounge at the showground.
