As the first BMW X4 takes its leave, it also marks an anniversary. The 200,000th mid-range Sports Activity Coupé came off the production line at the BMW plant in Spartanburg/USA in January – the production of the first-generation BMW X4 is scheduled to end in March 2018.

It all started with an X. This letter was first used as a model designation for a BMW automobile as early as in the mid-1980s to indicate that it featured four-wheel drive technology. The car’s dual symmetry was the ideal allegory for the transmission of drive torque to all four wheels. 15 years ago, the letter X became the symbol of an entirely new vehicle category and, at the same time, of a very special form of driving pleasure.
The new BMW X4 blends the hallmark features of the successful BMW X family with the sporting elegance of a classical coupe, and introduces the unique Sports Activity Coupe concept to the premium mid-size segment.
With one world premiere and several Asian and Chinese premieres, BMW is using this year’s Beijing International Automotive Exhibition from 20 to 29 April 2014 to present an array of compelling production models which are geared to meeting present-day customer requirements and in some cases usher in all-new market segments.
