Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, June 8, 2001...Go ahead...wander off the map and
don't ask for directions. BMW of North America, LLC will soon offer the BMW
RideFinder GPS as an optional accessory on all of its touring motorcycles,
including the K 1200 LT, the R 1150 RT, and the R 1100 RT.
The RideFinder is a portable satellite navigation system that pinpoints the
rider's location and destination on a high-resolution, color map, calculates
the best route and offers voice-guided turn-by-turn directions via the
motorcycle's audio system. It was developed in conjunction with Garmin
International, Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd., a leading manufacturer of
GPS-enabled navigation, communication and information devices, and it is
modeled after a similar system -- the Garmin StreetPilot III.
"BMW riders are tech-savvy, adventurous and have a penchant for touring,"
commented Jeff Byers, Marketing Manager for BMW Motorcycles. " This is one
optional accessory that is going to be in high demand."
Byers also predicts that BMW owners will appreciate the fact that the
RideFinder GPS is waterproof, since many motorcyclists are not deterred by foul
weather. Another bonus is that riders can personalize their road trip using
the RideFinder's built-in routable basemap or Garmin MapSource MetroGuide data
stored on a removable memory cartridge. The system's internal database will
also include the locations of BMW motorcycle retailers across the country.
The RideFinder GPS will be available at BMW Motorcycle retailers in July at a
manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,495.
