„Obviously this event is an example. That’s what we need. We need practical examples of how this so called new energy works, hydrogen. And the example that it is here you can sit in it and you can drive it and you can go around the block. You realize that it’s real that it’s no longer theory. It’s not just an idea, it’s practical. It can be done. And all the people here understand that. It’s nice to be among people who share the same goal, share a common interest.” „If BMW would just give me an opportunity to buy a hydrogen powered BMW I would, like I fish after bath, I would go after it.”

Statements on MINI Cooper Hydrogen and the BMW Clean Energy strategy ?Hydrogen in the MINI for the first time – why? !”It’s a package study we made, that showed up that it’s also possible to make a small car driven by hydrogen. The customer has all the benefits he has from a MINI driven by gasoline.” ?What does the BMW Group solution look like? !”The solution is hydrogen, hydrogen made out of sun and water or wind, that means made out of renewable energy. That’s a very logical way coming out of the history. The history was having carbon as an energy and changed over to hydrocarbons and now the way is hydrogen, and that’s the future.”Various drive-past shots / pans and shots from parallel vehicle on Bavarian country roads.

„This coating technology is entirely new and took us about seven years to develop. It was a considerable challenge, with both the eternal departments and the external business associates had to meet when solving the technical problems.” „Other modern paint systems too offered the advantage of environmental protection because less solvent is used, but our system does not need any solvents at all. And since we don’t use water either, there is no effluent in the form of contaminated water. We have almost a hundred percent rate of material utilization. This is because the overspray, in other words the paint that fails to adhere to the body, is collected up again immediately, added to fresh powder coating material and reprocess. The term for this is direct in-plant recycling.” „It has been in series production since1997, and we have delivered more than 900 000 vehicle to markets all over the world. The Technology has aroused great interest internationally, with American and Japanese automobile manufactures making tests with the new system.”

Recycling expert takes the time. The worker explains to the recycling experts where problems arose during the dismantling process. The recycling expert takes pictures of all problem-areas and enters the dismantling results into a database (time, weight, materials, connecting technology etc.) Dismantling parts „tree“ (shows in graphic form the results of dismantling analysis and the economic viability of individual components). Exterior shots of the BMW Research and Engineering Centre Recycling expert approaches the engineer, explains the results of the dismantling analysis and discusses ways of improving the design (fewer different screwed connections) Production of instrument panels, consisting of outer skin, carrier (SMA+GF) and polyurethane foam joining everything together. In a dry separating process the parts are broken down into their three original plastics with the aid of grinders and air supply (carrier granules, skin and foam powder) Pan over piles of individual, separated plastics Chart of instrument panel material cycle for a 3 Series car Chart of instrument panel material cycle for a 3 Series car

Heat insulation of the exhaust system (BMW 5 Series): Cutting up a previously used part: external aluminium layer and mineral wool are permanently bonded together and cannot be recycled. Removal of heat insulation from a current BMW 5 Series car Removed part is dumped into grid box labelled “aluminium” Cutting up the removed part: the interior consists of an aluminium honeycomb network rather than mineral wool. The part is thus entirely made from a single material and can be recycled without problems. ?How does BMW support HIV-infected people? !”From the medical station side: we are there for the support of the patient living with HIV/ AIDS. From the company perspective we have a programme in place that we hope to action very soon in terms of developing a culture of trust, supporting those living with HIV and focussing on prevention programmes. Not only preventing new infection, but those who are already infected keeping them well and productive for a long time and to support, nurture and link up with the social environment and to maintain that.”!?At which age AIDS education should start? !“The education in the Early Learning Centre is critical, this is the focus, every local government is looking at the moment. Developing a child with a sense of values and a sense of self worth…is a kind of approach we want to install in young children. We want to offer sports…give literacy programme…We also need to focus on the group under 10. In youth aged 15-19 years coming to a clinic, 42% are already HIV positive. So the programmes in High Schools have not been effective. So we need to re-focus on a much Younger child. So we have an opportunity at BMW to focus on young children.”!

?What do you think of the BMW AIDS policy? !“BMW is a very important company in SA, one of the largest employers. We expect of BMW that it continues to play its role, from the business pov and also from a good citizenship pov. We believe that workplaces are the battle areas where to achieve much success in the fight against AIDS. So if BMW does the job that it does in the workplace and the management of people, and focuses on the HIV/ AIDS problem it will be making a huge contribution…We need companies to help us to develop human resources but as also in the fight against HIV/ AIDS.”!

?What do you think about BMW’s engagement? !”The BMW they are the most famous company in South Africa and is doing a good job for us. Especially in this disadvantaged universities for people who never had the chances to get this. For e.g. they never had the sponsors to get further and learn about the background. So I think what they are doing is very fine and I really appreciate.” EMO-Trailer
