“Being the BMW Williams at one Test Driver is not normally that I come to a Trainings but I’m happy I did so, because first I realized how this Training works, and how helpful it can be do any person really no matter how good a driver they are. Also I’ve seen also that they really put you in all kind of situations that you might come up. Whether it’s rain, whether it’s sunny taking in avoid in action where it’s the car is sliding in a corner. So you get to see all this situations, also you get first the theory and then the practice. And then they thought of the fun part. That you can get to do things you can never do. You can get to drive in a circuit, you can get to do power slides, that you usually not do, and you have very good instructors that they can communicate very well and then they always makes you that the situation is save. So even as a Formula 1 driver really is a fun day for me today. And I learn things with you would thing a Formula 1 driver will never learn anything and even if a Formula 1 driver learn things. So that shows how important it is for every person you know. So it was very interesting for sure.

“I would say straight away that this should be part of the driver’s test, perhaps not when taking the test but one year after getting your licence, this sort of safety training. I believe that would be incredibly sensible. Yes, I would have been happy if it been part of the test when I took it.”

Interview situation Isenberg standing in front of car. “Drivers’ safety training is considerably different from racing driver training. The racing driver has to drive relatively fast on specific, known race tracks. In the drivers’ safety training we train people in respect of braking, swerving, driving in curves in order to drive more safely but not necessarily more quickly.” “The vehicles are considerably safer today. We have many electronic help systems, which make operating the vehicle easier for the driver. Despite this, it is not the cars that cause accidents but the drivers. And this is what we want to prevent.” “The training on offer has been expanded considerably over the last 25 years. Today we have step programme with several stages starting with street traffic in the city, 50 km/h, in the next stage comes driving, practising, training at speed as though on a main highway. They we move on to the race track where we train critical Autobahn situations at around 130 km/h. Parallel to this, we also have developed other training elements in the offroad area and also specific training for motorcyclists.” “Training means practising again and again. It is the same for footballers and for racing drivers and it is the same for driving in traffic, train the especially critical situations.” Anybody who feels comfortable driving can take part in the drivers’ safety training. Our oldest participant is 80 years old.” “In 1977, BMW was the first automobile manufacturer to offer safety training to the general public. We welcomed about 800 participants year to start with. Now we have more than 15,000 participants who all want to improve their driving skills.” “Most accidents happen on wet roads I traffic. We train for this and that is how we start. If you want to learn more, you can take additional courses. Or you can prepare for the winter conditions by training on ice and snow.” We offer different courses for cars, four x four and Motorbikes.” “We don’t see a limit in taking part of Driver Training. Everybody as long as he feels fine in a vehicle can participate in a Driver Training. “ “First it’s important that people learn the basics in the Driving School. Afterwards we believe its very important that we prepare them for tricky, critical situations. This you can learn in a Driver Training Course.” “25 Years ago the vehicles where not that well equipped with technical equipment for example ABS, Emergency Stopping, today we have ABS so we could change this exercise with breaking to breaking with lane change for example.” “In 1977 we started with BMW Driver Training with round about 800 Students per year, nowadays we welcome 15 000 people every year who want to participate in our trainings.”

Interview Situation, close up. “The thing that has changed is that we have to design our exercises such that the driver also gets to know our fine new electronic assistance, but can also cope with this assistance, because you have to cope all around, as we say. We make exercises where the driver learns DSC, Dynamic Stability Control. The driver knows how the car reacts when changing lanes quickly, when avoiding obstacles, how to brake properly. Before, everything was more difficult. Today, it is all easier but you need to know more.” “You need more classes which is why we have our step system where you can always move up. I would say once a year would be good.” “When you buy a new car, it would be good to get to know the refinements of the new vehicle.” “The philosophies of 25 Years have been to try to get the participants prepared for any situation. Now its clear that you can not train any situation, but if the person it’s trained mentally so that he trusts his vehicle he knows what moments to do. He’s not afraid if the car gets in a small drift and slight. He is prepared to continue his driving it means he knows how to break, how to steer and what is most important to know how to sit properly. And then if you know all this and you’ve been facing difficulties one, two or three days in Training and something happens on the road, the person have much better chances to make their right decision to avoid an accident.” “Traffic has changed in 25 Years. There are many more cars today. The cars are better, the cars easier to drive, the cars are saver. But of course there are many more people and the speeds are today lower than 25 years ago.” “It means that we have the people aware how they can make best use of their cars evens if it gets dangerous. Although our principal is try to convince people that to be impatient helps keep distance to the next person because most properly the next person on the road has not visiting our driving school. “
