Exactly twenty years ago, the BMW Motorsport Limited created the very first BMW M5. It was a normal salon with the 3.5 Liter 6 cylinder engine, from the fascinating M1 mid engine sports car with an output of impressive 277 break horsepower. This new car created a new vehicle segment, the so called, high performance salon segment. In 1988 the second generation of the BMW M5 was created. Its engine output increased to more than 300 horsepower, its strongest version had even 340 horsepower out of 3.8 liter capacity. Also a station wagon was an offer. All M5 had completely made by hand. Due to customers’ desire for more performance, BMW M created in 1998 the third generation of the M5, now with a five Liter V8 engine, and with an output of 400 horsepower. This was the very first M5 which was produced in the BMW plant in Dingolfing. On the one hand it was a perfect long distance car, and on the other hand it enabled a good driver to do the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap in eight and a half minutes.

General shots. What is an M5? The M5 is not a tuned BMW 5 Series but rather a high performance salon, developed exclusively by BMW M on the basis of BMWs’ well know new 5 Series. BMW is now introducing the fourth generation of this highly successful model, which has indeed created an entirely new class of car in the market, the high performance salon. The first M5 entered the market in 1985 with total production at sales now amounting to approximately 35.000 units. What makes the M5 so successful? The unique success of this unique car is based on the very special combination of absolute high performance sports car technology, and the discreet body design of the salon. This combination is truly unique and thrills our M5 customers. What do the new M5 and Formula 1 have in common? Both engines and the engine electronics are developed by BMW engineers. Both engine blocks are casted in Landshut, both share the philosophy of high engine speed the V10 is a core competence of BMW. What does this philosophy mean in practise? High torque Is not everything; a tractor also has lots of torque. So instead BMW M focuses in particular in the cars pulling power and genuine Muscle under practical driving conditions. This is a result of superior engine torque and the overall transmission ratio of the gearbox, which in the case of the new M5 is our sequential M5 gearbox. The high speed engine concept ensures an optimum transmission ratio and accordingly truly impressive power and muscle at all times. Who are the typical customers of the M5? Most of the customers who buy this car, a self supporting business people and managers in executive positions, who drive the car everyday, many of them have several cars at home and have a high income. Wont cars of this kind one day lead to an introduction of a speed limit in Germany? No we don’t think so, simple because there a far to few cars like this compared, with the overall number of vehicles on the road. And introducing the new M5 BMW is maintaining its general limitation of the cars speed 250 per hour or 145 miles per hour. We see no reason to give up this gentleman’s agreement, we have made with other manufactories. The principal market of the M5 are the US, Great Britain, Japan and Germany.

Well in our opinion the new sequential M gearbox is the most sportive and efficient gearbox for such a car. It was specially and exclusive developed for the new M5. No manual gearbox can be handled faster than this SMG. In German we say the chassis must be faster than the engine. In this chase we modified all technical parts under the body. So for example, we developed a special electronic damper system and also a special dynamic stability system. The result is this car is very fast, save and easy to drive.
