Home boy Breen enjoys a Championship double as Quinn and Arundel triumph in
Rookie Cup.
Mondello Park, 23 April, 2006. Niall Breen (Fortec Motorsport) claimed a sweet
double race victory in front of his home fans and took overall lead at the top
of the Formula BMW UK Championship 2006 table.
Basking in glorious sunshine, the young Irishman dominated both rounds with two
equally dazzling performances of controlled racing to claim maximum points.
"It has been a great day for me" Breen commented, "I've come back to my home
patch and given it a real go and have come out on top. It is extra special to
do it in front of my friends and family."
Starting off from pole in the first race of the day, Breen led from start to
finish and sailed home over a second ahead of Ross Curnow (Nexa Racing). Behind
the front two, was an almighty tussle for third with Michael Meadows (Master
Motorsport) holding on to the position ahead of Euan Hankey (Fortec Motorsport)
in fourth and Michael Patrizi (Motaworld Racing) in fifth.
Curnow, who set a new Formula BMW lap record at Mondello with a 1.40.688,
beating the mark set last year by 2005 Formula BMW UK Champion, Dean Smith,
said: "I was caught between trying to catch Niall and also fending off the guys
behind me who were really putting the pressure on. It was a tough race, but
I'll take second."
The local fans were given extra cause for celebration when fellow Irishman,
Niall Quinn (Carlin Motorsport), sealed the Rookie Cup win. Greg Mansell (Team
SWR) and Matthew Hamilton (Coles Racing) made up the top three newcomers, with
ninth and eleventh finishes respectively.
Niall Quinn said: "I made a bad start but managed to make up the places and I'm
delighted to get my hands on another Rookie trophy."
Race Two saw Niall Breen go head-to-head with his Fortec Motorsport team mate,
Euan Hankey. Starting in second and third places on the gird, both drivers were
quick out of the traps to overtake polesitter, Oliver Oakes (Carlin Motorsport).
Breen took the chequered flag, but had the luck of the Irish on his side to
take top spot. Hankey, one of the most consistent drivers in the pack, was
forced into an unusual mistake at the penultimate corner on lap five, and spun
off into the gravel, allowing his team mate through. Once in front, Breen was
in complete control and made the most of the empty track to bring home his
second piece of silverware of the day.
Despite starting on pole, a clearly disappointed Oliver Oakes had to be content
with a second place finish: "I really wanted the win today, and I'm so
disappointed to lose the lead on the first lap."
Henry Arundel (Fortec Motorsport) made up for the disappointment of not
finishing Race One by putting in a mature drive to take the second Rookie Cup
honours of the day.
Arundel commented: "I'm glad the day has ended on a high. Of course I am a bit
disappointed not to finish the race this morning, but it is was an experience
for me, and I am sure I'll learn from it."
Niall Quinn pushed Arundel hard to try and claim his second win but just missed
out on the making it an all Irish winners day coming in second ahead of Greg
Mansell (Team SWR).

Background:
Formula BMW is the world's leading entry-level class in Formula racing. In 2006
the series will be held in Germany, the UK, Asia and the USA. Up-and-coming
drivers as young as 15-years-old are given the opportunity of entering motor
racing with the high-tech, standard FB02 race car.
This racing car has been seen on the grid since 2002 and has set standards
particularly on the safety technology front. The single-seater is propelled by
a 140 bhp BMW engine up to 230km/h and exceeds the FIA safety requirements for
its class. BMW Motorsport has developed the FORS Formula Rescue Race Seat
especially for Formula BMW. The HANS safety system is also mandatory.
In 2006, Formula BMW will be staged five times as part of the Formula One
support programme. All the series offer a multifaceted Education and Coaching
Programme as well as sponsorship for promising racing talents. The best known
alumni of this talent hothouse are Formula One drivers Ralf Schumacher,
Christian Klien and Nico Rosberg.
BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen: "Formula BMW offers talented young
drivers more than just a car. In the Education and Coaching Programme we have
designed specially for them, they learn everything they need to know to hold
their own in the big wide world of motor racing. Formula BMW has shot out of
the blocks to become the top entry-level class for Formula racing worldwide".
From 13th to 16th December 2005 the Bahrain International Circuit hosted the
first Formula BMW World Final. Young racing drivers from the four regional
Formula BMW series competed against each other. The winner Marco Holzer will
get a test drive with the BMW Sauber F1 Team.
