Munich/Frankfurt. With numerous innovations, BMW ConnectedDrive once again
underscores its pre-eminent position in the field of driver assistance at the
62nd International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. Under the overall concept of
ConnectedDrive, BMW unites individual online, assistance and service systems in
the car which can be used directly via the navigation system or telephone and
which significantly enhance comfort and safety. The ongoing development of
these services guarantees the driver maximum mobile comfort and con-venience of
information access at all times. As highlights of this year's IAA, BMW
ConnectedDrive showcases Google local search and BMW TeleServices, as well as
the BMW emergency call function and the Personal Radio research project.
Google local search. BMW is the only car manufacturer in the world to offer
Google local search from inside the car. This function is available with
immediate effect and means that, throughout Germany, local information can be
called up directly from the internet in the car in a similar way to using a
business directory. The search results can then be downloaded to the navigation
system or mobile phone at the mere touch of a button. The system automatically
recognises the location or destin-ation of the vehicle and displays the local
results with name, address, telephone number and distance. Google local search
is a service of BMW ConnectedDrive and is free of charge for three years in
Germany
if the Professional navigation system has been selected.
Emergency call. In the event of an accident, every second counts. That is why
BMW provided its first cars with a lifesaving emergency call function as far
back as 1997. Ten years later almost to the day, there are currently more than
500,000 vehicles on the road equipped with the BMW ConnectedDrive emergency
call function. To date, the BMW emergency call has ensured rapid assistance
worldwide in more than 20,000 cases. It is triggered either manually or by an
automatic impulse when the crash sensors and airbags are activated. The vehicle
inde-pendently relays its exact position data along with the chassis number,
car model and colour. The emergency services are then contacted by BMW staff at
the call centre. Based on the detailed information provided, the rescue team
reaches the car in question in the quickest way possible - gaining precious
time that in extreme cases could mean the difference between life and death.
BMW TeleServices. The intelligent networking of the vehicle and BMW Service has
now been extended, thus making for even greater convenience. The BMW Group is
the only car manufacturer to offer not only the automatic BMW TeleService Call,
by which the car automati-cally contacts the BMW Service Partner when a service
is due, but also the option of activating the BMW TeleService Call manually.
This is useful, for example, if the driver wishes to arrange an individual
service appointment for a tyre change.
A new feature is that, in the unlikely event of a technical malfunction, the
driver can contact BMW Breakdown Assistance directly at the touch of a button
and initiate a BMW TeleService Diagnosis. In addition to trans-mitting the
Condition Based Service Data (CBS), this also relays any error messages from
the car. That gives the BMW Breakdown Assistance specialist a better chance of
pinpointing the cause of a fault and initiating appropriate measures to rectify
it. He can decide whether the functionality can be restored remotely using BMW
TeleService Assistance or whether other action needs to be taken.
BMW Personal Radio. The future of information access belongs to
personalisation. To enable BMW drivers to compile their own personal in-car
radio programme in the future, BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH - the BMW Group's
research arm - is working intensively on the BMW Personal Radio project. Based
on the driver's preferences, a diverse range of content is intelligently
combined by the car to produce an in-dividual radio programme that can be
accessed anytime and anywhere. Music or information programmes can be freely
selected, paused, skipped or repeated. Irrespective of the transmission area,
it is also possible to receive your favourite station in the car as a podcast
through the internet.
At the 62nd International Motor Show in Frankfurt, the BMW Group along with its
content partners Sony BMG, myAudioNews, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Sport1.de and
Audible, as well as technology partner m2any, presents the state of the art of
research and looks ahead to the technical possibilities of the future.
About BMW ConnectedDrive
BMW combines individual online, assistance and service systems in the vehicle
under the overall concept of ConnectedDrive. These are services that can be
directly accessed using the navigation system or phone and they make a
significant contribution to the enhancement of comfort and safety. For example,
BMW Assist accesses the latest traffic information and provides a personal
information service, alongside the emergency call function. Any data requested
on restaurants, cinemas or hotels can be incorporated directly in the BMW
navigation system as a destination. Internet-based services such as calling up
share prices, weather reports and free parking spaces come under BMW Online.
The vehicle uses BMW TeleServices to contact a BMW Service Partner
automatically when it needs a service. Further information is available online
at www.bmw-connecteddrive.com.
