Munich. Introducing a new dream car, the 6 Series Coupé, BMW is not just
continuing the heritage of the first legendary 6 Series (1976-1989), but is
also maintaning the Company's long tradition of large luxury coupés.
This new fascinating sports car characterised by its exclusive style and design
language will be making its debut at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show in
September. Market launch in Germany is planned for the end of 2003 and the
price not yet finally determined will be oriented to the price level of the new
BMW 7 Series.
The new BMW 6 Series later to be supplemented by a 2+2 convertible stands out
not only through its exceptional dynamism and precision, but also through its
unique design with sleek and flowing lines supplemented by the harmony of
elegant surfaces to give the car unique character. And benefitting from its
powerful but refined engine, its outstanding sportiness and more than ample
interior space, the new BMW 645 Ci will set new standards in the luxury sports
coupé market.
A new sports car with unusual proportions.
The 6 Series coupé excels through its stretched and classic proportions - the
car is deep, long and wide, with an aura of strength and self-confidence. Moved
back far to the rear, the passenger cell has a very low roof line, contoured
styling features on the front side panels loosening up the silhouette of the
car.
The modern design language of the exterior continues smoothly and consistently
throughout the interior. Like in the new 5 and 7 Series, all functions required
for driving the car are located directly on or around the steering wheel.
Access to the Controller masterminding BMW's unique iDrive control philosophy
is both convenient and ergonomic. All comfort functions, in turn, are within
easy reach from the front passenger's seat for smooth and convenient control.
A V8 power unit for dynamic driving pleasure.
The 4.4-litre V8 power unit already well known from the BMW 745i ensures
dynamic driving conditions and motoring qualities at all times. Featuring fully
variable VALVETRONIC valve control, the engine develops maximum output of 245
kilowatt (333 bhp) and powerful torque of 450 Newton-metres (332 lb-ft) at 3600
rpm. This enables the new 6 Series coupé to reach its top speed limited
electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph without the slightest effort.
Acceleration is equally good, with the BMW 645 Ci covering the classic sprint
from 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds.
To offer the customer a wide range of choice, this refined power can be
conveyed to the rear drive axle by three different six-speed transmissions:
- A manual six-speed gearbox
- Six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic
- Or a Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) featuring both a gearshift lever and
shift paddles on the steering wheel, like in Formula 1
The new 6 Series Coupé naturally comes as standard with BMW Dynamic Drive
Control (DDC) serving, inter alia, to give the engine an even more spontaneous
reaction to the gas pedal, influencing steering as a function of road speed,
revving up gears to higher speeds on models fitted with automatic transmission
or SMG, and providing a faster gearshift.
Superior agility ensured by intelligent lightweight engineering.
Consistent use of intelligent lightweight technologies makes a significant
contribution to the outstanding driving comfort and high level of dynamic
performance so typical of the BMW 6 Series Coupé. In particular, this superior
technology is borne out by the innovative combination of aluminum, steel and
synthetic materials throughout the body. With the front section of the car
significantly lighter than steel thanks to Weight-Reduced Aluminium-Technology
(WRAT), with the rear lid made of plastic, the front lid and doors made of
aluminium and the front side panels made of thermoplastic, overall weight of
the car is limited to approximately 1600 kg or 3528 lb, with axle load
distribution close to the ideal of 50:50.
This consistent reduction of weight ensures not only performance reminiscent of
a sports car as well as exceptional dynamics in bends, but also a high standard
of fuel economy most appropriate these days.
Highly dynamic aluminium chassis and suspension.
It almost goes without saying that the outstanding all-aluminium chassis and
suspension of the new 6 Series Coupé is upgraded by all relevant control
systems such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) including Dynamic Traction
Control (DTC). As an option, the 6 Series Coupé is also available with BMW's
"intelligent" Dynamic Drive suspension almost completely compensating body sway
in a bend as well as BMW's unique Active Steering providing a more direct
steering ratio at low speeds, together with more indirect steering at high
speeds.
Apart from all safety features characteristic of a BMW, the new 6 Series Coupé
comes as standard on runflat tyres allowing the driver to continue for a
certain distance even when a tyre is completely empty, without any air inside.
Adaptive Headlights swivelling to the side for even better illumination of the
road ahead are also available as an option.
Further options: Head-Up Display and glass panorama roof.
The Head-Up Display available as an option for the new BMW 6 Series at a
somewhat later date is truly unique in the large coupé market. Presenting
information relevant to the driver directly in his line of vision on the
windscreen, this feature ensures optimum clarity and allows the driver to
concentrate on the road ahead at all times.
Further options also available are Active Cruise Control (ACC) and the
innovative glass panorama vent roof with an electrically moving roofliner
giving the interior an even more spacious and brighter impression, especially
because the panorama roof is much larger than a conventional sliding roof.
Talking about space, the new BMW 6 Series, measuring 4820 millimetres or 189.8"
in length, 1855 millimetres or 73.0" in width, and just 1373 millimeters or
54.1" in height, offers ample space inside quite remarkable for a sports car of
this kind. Featuring as a 2+2-seater, the BMW 6 Series gives even the two
passengers at the rear ample freedom of movement, the large luggage compartment
being sufficient for two golf bags plus a suitcase.
Last but certainly not least, the audio system fitted as standard gives the
car's occupants a level of audio quality otherwise only offered by high-end
home entertainment systems. Automatic air conditioning, finally, also comes as
a standard feature.
