Dynamic Drive active suspensionCombination of 3-D animation and live shots of a BMW 745i at the BMW proving grounds (slalom and handling course, partly in direct comparison with a former 7 Series BMW). The following are excerpts from a commentary to help understanding the images:The lateral forces occurring when a car is driven fast on a twisty road inevitably cause it to lean, leading to a rolling motion. Dynamic Drive provides considerably greater agility and safety, with no reduction in the quality of the ride. The reduction in body roll also improves the comfort for the occupants when driving in a straight line.How the system works in practice: a sensor provides the basic lateral acceleration signal. The Dynamic Drive controller receives pressure signals from the active front and rear stabilizers; via the CAN bus it also receives information about the overall vehicle dynamics from other controllers, for example the DSC. The signals are processed and give rise to hydraulic pressures in the valve block, which are transmitted to the actuators and stabilizers.There, the resulting torsion generates the necessary forces which act on the superstructure.Dynamic Drive’s domain is undoubtedly curves and bends. But there is a further advantage. Asymmetric irregularities in the road surface, which can lead to low-frequency resonances (so-called "roll rock effect"), are absorbed better with Dynamic Drive.The smoother motion makes for improved comfort, and at the same time provides more agile and predictable behaviour.BMW Comfort Parking BrakeCombination of 3-D animation and live shots of a BMW 745i at the BMW proving grounds (partly in direct comparison with a former 7 Series BMW). The following are excerpts from a commentary to help understanding the images:The comfort parking brake is very easy to use. The effort required by the driver to apply and release it is no more than when operating a light switch. The current state of the system is indicated by familiar symbols.The basic function is of course that of a handbrake:So long as the engine is running, it acts via the DSC hydraulics on the front and rear disc brakes. The car is thus held stationary.If the engine is switched off, a signal is passed to an electromechanical actuator (11:01:11). The braking effect is then transmitted via two brake cables to the duo-servo drum brakes in the rear wheels.When the engine is restarted, the reverse takes place: the DSC hydraulics take over the braking function, and the electromechanical brake is released. The car is again braked hydraulically.Further functions of the parking brake make life easier for the driver. At traffic lights, or in stop-and-go traffic, the Automatic Hold function ensures that the car is automatically held stationary after coming to a halt.This Hold function compensates for the tendency of the automatic transmission to creep, without the driver having to use the footbrake.Hill starts are also easier as a result. The car is held stationary until the accelerator is depressed. The Hill Hold function prevents it slipping back.The parking brake is not just more convenient.There are also clear safety advantages.The law requires that a parking brake should also bring the car to a halt in an emergency. The hydraulic parking brake provides much higher deceleration than a conventional parking brake.It acts on all four wheels, making use of all control and regulation systems.
