Udo Rietschel, Projects Connected Drive, BMW Group Research and Technology: “One of the main causes of accidents in intersections is that drivers performing a left turning maneuver will overlook oncoming traffic. Therefore we at the BMW Group research and Technology have developed a Left Turn Assistant. The system works by having sensors in the front of the car detecting the position and velocity of incoming traffic and is calculation all the time the collision risk between each and every vehicle and if the collision risk exceed a given threshold the vehicle will perform an autonomies breaking maneuver and stops before the vehicle is entering the lane of the incoming traffic.” Split screen left turn assistant.

BMW ConnectedRide is the motorcycle side of the well known communication program BMW ConnectedDrive. In this project BMW develops rider assistance systems for motorcyclists which improves the motorcycle safety further. With this technology BMW is the worldwide first automobile manufacturer who integrates also motorbikes in the communication between vehicles or between vehicle and infrastructure. The basis of the technology is the positioning of the vehicles in the road traffic. That means the position data and the rider dynamic data are transfer between vehicles or between vehicles and the infrastructure. Imagine an intersection on which a motorcycle rider and a car driver approach on a collision course. In this situation quite often the motorcycle rider is not detected by the car driver because of the small silhouette of the motorcycle. In this situation we calculate collision probability. If it increases our specific level we increase the illumination of the headlight. In the next sequent we modulate the head light and if the collision probability still increases we activate sidewise fitted flashlights on the motorcycle to increase the conspicuity of the motorcycle. In the last sequent, if the collision probability is very high the system activates the horn of the motorcycle. In the context of BMW ConnectedRide the following driver assistance systems can be mentioned: The traffic light assistant who makes the driving more convenient or more save. The intersection assistant which addresses critical situations on intersections or the obstacle warning which provides information about break down vehicles on the road. Quite new is the left turn assistant who improves the safety of an incoming motorcycle when a car turns left. All assistant systems can be tested in motorbikes or in cars.

Car-to-x communication means the communication between cars and between infrastructure and cars. The aim of the technology is to send over safety relevant information for example oil on the road or the end of congestion. The driver gets this information very early and so he can actively avoid any critical driving situation. Looking for the technology it works like at home where you connect your pc to the internet over the Wi-Fi-technology. The advantage of the car-to-X technology is to send traffic relevant information as fast as possible to the driver so that he can actively avoid any critical driving situation. Example is the end of congestion or oil on the road after the next curve. Actually we investigate the car-to-X technology in a national project. The project name is SimTD. All German car manufacturers and the main suppliers are working together in this project to test the technology in real traffic situations. BMW for example has a fleet of cars and also motorcycles. The project end is 2013. The results will than evaluated and the roll out of the technology will then define.
