Presenter: We prepared a little game, better than gambling in Las Vegas! Denise: As long as we win, I guess! Wanna do it? David: Sure. Presenter stops Magdalena and Joseph in the street and talks to them. Presenter: Excuse me, guys, before you go gambling, would you mind an experiment with future car technology? Magdalena: What is it about? Presenter: It is a little secret but you will like it more than gambling. Joseph: Secret? Wanna try? Magdalena: Yes, we do it. Denise, David, Joseph, Magdalena arrive at the parking. Walk around two BMW i3 test vehicles, mount the cars, drive off. Denise, David, Joseph, Magdalena: Here we are! How exciting! I like it! It’s sweet! Welcome to the future, guys! Amazing, look at the front! Let’s take the black one. I want to have this. Look at the rims. Yes, it is really cool. You like him? Are you driving? Denise drives obstacle course blindfold. David is passenger. David: That’s what they told us to do. Denise: I have never done that before. I am nervous. David: I am nervous too, cause I am in the car. Denise: Okay, I found the seat. I found the seat belt buckle. Oh, this is so dark. Found the brake, found the gas… Car is on? It is so quiet. David: A little left, straight, keep going a little faster, make a right, keep going. Denise: It braked for me. I think it stopped. That was not me. David: It is all right. You are close to something. You made it. Denise: That was pretty good. It braked for me 5 times! Awesome! Denise drives obstacle course without blindfold. David: Try no blindfold… You gotta zoom right through this. Denise: I got too close. David: See you weaving through. Denise: Yes, let me drive really sporty! It only brakes when you hit something. David: Yes you didn’t hit anything, that is good. No accidents no problems! Denise and David swap seats. Driving reverse and slalom. David: I wanna try this one. It is my turn. Denise: You got to go reverse. David: Yes, the fun way. I guess it is good, because I hit things in the past going reverse. Denise: That was great so! David: I made it pretty good! Denise: That camera is great! You did good, better than me! David: Thanks to this computer system! Not bad. That was fun! No damage! David drives full speed against wall. David: Full speed ahead! Denise: Without putting on the brake. David: Look at that! The foot still on the gas! Lets see what happens if I put the bad boy in reverse! That is pretty cool. One more time! David and Denise drive around a corner. Denise: Oh, you cleared it. David: That was close. Denise: We didn’t even hit it! David, Denise, Joseph, Magdalena parking challenge. Denise: Now it is time fort he parallel parking challenge. You two guys are going to parallel park. I have the stopwatch, the one with the best time wins. Good luck. Are you ready? On your marks! Statement English 1: 360°-Obstacle-Avoidance is a safety function that prevents the driver from hitting obstacles that are static up to speeds of about 15 mph. Statement English 2: The car constantly predicts the movement of the manually driven car and determines what obstacles get closest to the car. It then has to calculate an optimal stopping movement and pursues this movement if the obstacle gets to close. Statement English 3: The safety function is permanently active while the driver is driving manually. It lets the driver into really really small parking spots and only interferes if an obstacles gets really close. Statement English 4: This system bases on a 360° surround view of the environment. It builds up constantly a map so that the system can even react to obstacles that are in blind spots of the sensors. For example, if an obstacle gets to close to the doors and there is no sensor it still can brake so you won’t have an accident right there.

Joseph and Magdalena arrive in BMW i3, Joseph gets out of car, tap on the smartwatch, BMW i3 parks autonomously. Joseph: They told me to get out and push the button. Magdalena: Don’t go too far. Joseph: I am right here. Magdalena: Oh my god! Joseph: No way! No hands! Awesome, it is going to park all on it’s own! Amazing, I love it! Safe and sound. Magdalena: Oh my god! Joseph: It parked perfectly. Magdalena: It was doing everything on it’s own! Joseph: I just pushed the button. Magdalena: What does the watch do? Can you do everything with the watch? We need one like that! Joseph: Was it scary? Magdalena: It was amazing, yes, a little scary. And it is parking better than you! Smartwatch CU. BMW i3 parks autonomously.

Statement English 1: The BMW Remote Valet Parking Assistant takes over the task to park the vehicle in the car park. As the driver you can leave the car as soon as you are at the entrance of the car park. You can start the function with the smart watch. The vehicle then autonomously navigates through the car park and reaches a free parking lot. Statement English 2: During the whole process you can see the status of the vehicle via your smartwatch. Once you want to return to the car park you can call your vehicle via your smartwatch and it will be waiting at the exit of the car park as soon as you arrive. Statement English 3: We have developed a few core components to enable this functionality. Laserscanners monitor the vehicle’s surrounding, detect obstacles and helps the vehicle to localize itself. GPS is needed for this function. Statement English 4: Planning algorithms help the vehicle to determine the best way through the parking garage and to enable the vehicle to reach the parking lot as safely as possible. Statement English 5: We did develop this function to have minimum requirements on the parking garage only a map of the car park is required and we think a lot of car parks will enable this function pretty soon.

Statement English 1: Here at the CES in Las Vegas we want to present how our iDrive System will be developed in the future. So we will integrate a touchscreen as we observed our users are really used to interacting by touchscreens on mobile devices. They tap, they spread, they swipe and we also want to offer those possibilities to our customers. So our iDrive Controller has now in addition a touchscreen and people can also tip through the menu or always change back tot he iDrive Controller to interact as they like. So it is very easy and flexible to interact with the system. Statement English 2: In special cases also the visual presentation of the screen adapts to the modality I am using at the moment. So for number input you can see the round speller and if my finger comes closer to the screen it changes to the number pad and I can dial my number as I am used to do it on my mobile device. Statement English 3: In addition to touchscreen and controller interaction wouldn’t it be nice if our system is able to detect few hand movements and the whole thing would become a little bit magical. So we integrated a gesture space near the steering wheel and there is a camera which can detect hand movements and hand poses. Statement English 4: We don’t want any activation so there are global gestures which can be conducted comfortable and immediate. For instance we can adjust volume by rotating. Therefore we see a little graphic which shows which gesture is recognized and how it should be conducted. Statement English 5: There are also special gestures which are available in special situations. For instance when a phone call is coming in it is possible to decline it by a swipe. As you can see on the graphics on the right side it is also possible to accept the phone call by pointing in the air. Statement English 6: On the top it is possible to use gestures as personal magical shortcuts. Statement English 7: We have integrated a camera system into our rooftop. This camera recognizes hand movements as well as hand poses. If a gesture has been detected it will be handed over to the iDrive system and the associated function will be conducted.

Statement English 1: BMW Touch Command is an innovative control element for the rear seat passenger. Using a CE tablet together with a BMW User Interface the passenger is able to control comfort functions, entertainment functions and infotainment functions. Starting with seat. In the seat menu the passenger is able to control his seat in the backrest and move the seat forward or backward. You get back by the home button and from there you are also able to control the climate functions. For example adjusting the temperature or sliding on the ventilation. Back with the home button then you have entertainment functions. After selecting the seat position you can select the preferred channel you want to listen or even change the source like music collection and select from there another title. Getting back through the home button. Finally you are also able to use all the Android functions going to the apps button you are in the Android environment and can use all the Android functions. CE tablet CU.
