Traditionally, coupés and convertibles are the most emotive vehicles in our model portfolio, the core of our brand, as it were. The number one reason for buying one is the design, of course. But customers are also convinced by their performance, handling and quality. We want to offer our customers more and more new and personalised options. In this particular case, we specially asked our designers to come up with new extrovert, sporty colours. Our two new colours – Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange – emphasise the sporty character and lines of the model, even from standstill, so they fit the bill perfectly.

We’re targeting commuters, people who do a lot of urban driving. But this car also works well over longer distances, for weekend breaks. It’s great for longer distances because the electric motor makes it fuel-efficient and very convenient. It can also cover shorter distances in urban settings almost entirely electrically. iPerformance is about the transfer of technologies from our BMW i brand to our core BMW brand. The 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid is our sixth iPerformance model and brings BMW i’s high-voltage battery pack, power electronics and so on, to the broader market of the core BMW brand. The 530e offers the best of both worlds. One the one hand there’s the highly efficient, zero-emissions, silent electric drive system. On the other there’s the extreme dynamism of the electric and combustion units working in concert. Together, they produce the typical, familiar BMW dynamics. We’ve accommodated the lithium-ion battery in a compact space at the vehicle’s centre of gravity and put the tank in the ideal position, above the rear axle. So we now have a completely flat floor for the cargo space. For more capacity, there’s an additional storage compartment. Alternatively, you can lower the floor. 410 litres of luggage capacity in total is plenty for a longer trip.

The all-new BMW M550i xDrive is highly emotive to drive – which is typical for M Performance. It’s very dynamic, but also very precise and agile. We achieved this by adjusting the typical components, of course: the engine, transmission, suspension and steering. But we also added to the sound, which is a very important factor in the emotional experience of a car like this. As with all the M Performance models, the special design features of this model are in Cerium Grey, such as the kidney grille frame and air intakes at the front left and right, but also on the sides of the car, for the mirror caps and Air Breather. In addition, we’re going to issue a 20-inch-wheel version in Cerium Grey. So the M550i will be immediately recognisable as something special. As with all the M Performance models, we did a lot of detail work on the engine, steering and transmission. For the first time, we have a V8 TwinTurbo petrol engine with increased output of 462hp and 650 Nm torque. The figures alone are truly impressive. But another important factor is the suspension, which is set up especially for M Performance, as are the steering and transmission. And anyone looking for even more can opt for the adaptive M Suspension Professional, which includes integral active steering and roll stabilisation. The new M550i xDrive goes from standstill to 100 km/h in 4 seconds. You can hardly get better than that. And rest assured: after five generations of the M5, since the High-Performance Sedan segment was founded, gen six is even going one better in terms of handling. We’re using everything we know and love from motorsport to take the next step forward with the new M550i xDrive. Various shots from Car Details
