The new BMW X3 and X4 models will be introduced to the New Zealand market in Q4 this year, carrying a raft of updates and upgraded interior equipment.

The new and consolidated BMW X3 model range features four variants, with a fifth option available in the form of the highly-anticipated, all-electric iX3.

This makes the BMW X3 the model with the most diverse range of powertrains, giving customers compelling options for all lifestyles and preferences, in line with BMW Group’s ‘Power of Choice’ product strategy.

New modern design and sport-focused genes

The new BMW X3 now boasts an even more modern appearance that conveys a sporty and

powerful presence with design changes to the front and rear.

The front styling of the new BMW X3 is characterised by a redesigned BMW kidney grille, featuring headlights that are approximately 10 millimetres narrower.

The BMW kidney grille is now more strikingly shaped, especially in the upper area, and now features a single piece frame.

New Adaptive LED headlights with redesigned headlight graphics integrate matrix functions and intelligent adverse weather lights, doing away with the need for standalone foglights.

Ultra-long range BMW Laserlight systems with lighting capabilities of up to 650 metres are also optionally available.

The rear section of the new BMW X3 is made bolder and sportier as a result of various measures.

A black border provides the full LED rear lights a more precise appearance, while the narrower light graphic now includes a three-dimensionally modelled pincer contour and horizontal turn signals integrated in a filigree style.

The emphasis on horizontal lines, including in the concave area at the lower end of the tailgate, contributes to the clean impression of the rear.

Finally, newly designed and painted underbody protection trims provide a high-contrast finish and combine with the new, larger and flush-fitting free-form tailpipe trims for a truly sporty appearance.

The M Sport package, which is fitted as standard to the X3 xDrive30e and optional on the sDrive20i and xDrive20d, emphasises the dynamic genes of BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept even further.

Larger air intakes and a striking diffuser underline the prowess of the BMW SAV dynamic character. The window graphics, roof rails and BMW kidney bars are additionally finished in high-gloss black.

The new BMW X3 xDrive30e also bears minor bespoke touches to highlight its clean nature - an “electrified by i” emblem adorns the front wing, while an additional blue ring surrounds all its BMW logos, including those on the wheel hub covers.

The range topping X3 M40i meanwhile enjoys even greater differentiation, with a distinct M double bar kidney grille design, bigger 21-inch wheels and a unique ‘Two Teeth’ tailpipe trim in black chrome to prominently confirm its roots in the BMW M high performance stable.

Top-spec BMW X4 reserved for high performance M fans in New Zealand

The new BMW X4 adopts the new front end of the new BMW X3, but adds a unique curved roofline for a standalone character and appearance.

In New Zealand, only the top of the range M40i is available, offering high performance BMW M fans a triple dose of power, dynamism and practicality.

The X4 M40i comes standard with the M Sport package, featuring the M double bar kidney grille design and bigger 21-inch wheels. As with the side air curtain panels, the front apron is finished in high-gloss black and provides a bold high-contrast.

Full LED rear lights that emphasise the vehicle width protrude strikingly from the vehicle body with a three-dimensional design. A unique rear apron insert in the shape of an anvil frames the wide free-form tailpipe trims for a powerful overall appearance.

Significantly revised interior for both models

The new BMW X3 and BMW X4 adopt the centre console from all-new BMW 4 Series, bringing a contemporary and sporty feel to their cabins.

The free-standing central Control Display with touch function now offers a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and is fitted as standard in all vehicles.

The significantly improved standard equipment now also includes sports seats with covers from a new Sensatec generation – completely animal-free in origin.

The centre console on the new BMW X3 and X4 accommodates a newly designed control island with engine start button, gear selector lever, buttons for the start/stop system, electric parking brake, hill descent control and the BMW iDrive Controller.

New electroplated trim elements on the air vents add a touch of elegance while emphasising the interior’s horizontal lines.

Additional functions are offered by Ambient Light, which is now standard across both model lines.

The system features contour lighting above the decorative trim in the dashboard and lighting animations that correspond to events such as telephone calls and locking or unlocking the vehicle.

The most diverse line-up of powertrains available on the new BMW X3

Three engine variants are available for the BMW X3 line-up in New Zealand, starting with a 135kW/300Nm 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo for the X3 sDrive20i and a 140kW/400Nm diesel for the X3 xDrive20d.

A 215kW/420Nm (combined) plug-in hybrid powertrain is offered for the new BMW X3 xDrive30e. The plug-in hybrid SAV offers up to 46km of electric range on the WLTP cycle, ensuring that almost any daily work commute in New Zealand can be achieved emission-free.

The new BMW X3 xDrive30e features a 12kWh battery, and can be charged to 80% in as little as 2.5 hours using a BMW I Wallbox or compatible (Type 2) public AC charging station.

The intelligent plug-in hybrid plays to its strengths, depending on the driving situation. When charge is available, the car’s electric drivetrain is elected for moments it is most efficient at, for example, when moving off from standstill.

In cruising situations on the motorway, when its petrol powertrain can be more efficient, the car seamlessly switches over. The electric motor also intelligently recuperates excess energy generated by the brakes or engine deceleration to increase its e-range.

When required, the new BMW X3 xDrive30e can also enhance its total power output by intelligently utilising its electric motor.

The 135kW petrol powertrain can tap on the 80kW electric motor using a unique XtraBoost function for up to 10 seconds, making for a total temporary power output of 215kW.

The X3 M40i and X4 M40i both feature a powerful M TwinPower Turbo in-line six-cylinder engine producing an output of 285kW and 500Nm. This powerful engine enables ferocious acceleration, with both cars achieving the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.8 seconds.

8-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive feature in line-up

All engines are mated to eight-speed Steptronic gearboxes and specifically configured to their respective engine characteristics.

BMW xDrive all-wheel drive makes a significant contribution to the versatile sporty flair of the BMW X3 and BMW X4.

Its precise electronic control ensures optimum power distribution, but retains BMW’s traditional rear-drive orientation to make dynamic cornering in particular a rewarding experience.

In addition, BMW xDrive optimises both driving stability and traction over rough terrain.

Driver assistance systems elevated for new models

In refreshing the BMW X3 and BMW X4, BMW has significantly expanded the range of modern driver assistance systems to enhance both comfort and safety.

BMW’s new Intelligent Personal Assistant is standard across the range, enabling a wide scope of voice-activated commands.

Naturally spoken instructions can now be used to regulate the air conditioning, open and close the windows or change the driving experience modes.

It can also access the new News app, which reads out the latest news to passengers and learn routines that increase comfort and driving pleasure.

With BMW Live Cockpit Professional as standard and intelligent networking including digital services based on BMW Operating System 7, the BMW X3 and BMW X4 now offer particularly close interaction between driver and vehicle.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional is supplemented by BMW Head-Up Display, which is also standard on all New Zealand-delivered BMW X3 and X4 models.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional delivers optimised wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The driver can view important information from the apps on the Control Display and – in intelligently processed form – in the instrument cluster and BMW Head-Up Display.

With Android Auto™, BMW Group adds another customer-relevant service to its range of seamless in-vehicle connectivity, providing easy and safe use of smartphone functions such as music, media or messaging apps while driving.

Highlights of the interaction between Android Auto and BMW include convenient and wireless networking and the intelligent integration of Google Maps™ navigation instructions

in the BMW Head-up Display.

In addition, the My BMW App provides a universal interface to the vehicle. It offers information on the state of the vehicle at all times and, depending on the options fitted, enables remote access functions such as vehicle location, locking and unlocking the doors or recording the vehicle’s surroundings (Remote 3D View).

My BMW App also enables X3 xDrive30e owners to view e-mobility specific information such as current charge state of charging session details.

Remote Software Upgrade updates “over-the-air”

Since 2018, with the introduction of BMW Operating System 7, drivers have been able to keep their vehicle constantly up to date with the latest software status using Remote Software Upgrade.

On the BMW X3 and BMW X4, upgrades include new services and features that can be loaded over-the-air.

Furthermore, intelligent networking provides the option to integrate additional functions into the vehicle at a later date via BMW Connected Drive Store.

CO2 emission information.

Fuel consumption, CO2 emission figures and power consumption and range were measured using the methods required according to Regulation VO (EC) 2007/715 as amended. They refer to vehicles on the German automotive market. For ranges, the NEDC figures take into account differences in the selected wheel and tyre size, while the WLTP figures take into account the effects of any optional equipment.

All figures have already been calculated based on the new WLTP test cycle. NEDC figures listed have been adjusted to the NEDC measurement method where applicable. WLTP values are used as a basis for the assessment of taxes and other vehicle-related duties which are (also) based on CO2 emissions and, where applicable, for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies. Further information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures is also available at www.bmw.de/wltp.

For further details of the official fuel consumption figures and official specific CO2 emissions of new cars, please refer to the “Manual on the fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and power consumption of new cars”, available at sales outlets free of charge, from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT), Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern-Scharnhausen and at https://www.dat.de/co2/.
