Two new ultra high-performance mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) / Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) models from BMW, the X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition, will storm into New Zealand at the end of 2021.

The new BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition will feature a raft of updates, exciting new colours and upgraded interior equipment.

Powerful design built on updated BMW X3 and X4

The new BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition models build on the modern design of the updated BMW X3 and X4, but feature more powerful design elements that emphasis their ultra-high performance nature.

Four new colours - Carbon Black metallic, Marina Bay Blue metallic, Brooklyn Grey and Sao Paulo Yellow add to a large palette of attractive exterior colours for the new models. For the first time, BMW Individual paint finishes such as ‘Frozen’ matte options are also available on request.

An M-specific three-dimensional front apron design with additional painted surfaces offers high-contrast sportiness on both models, alongside a larger M double-bar kidney grille in a single-piece frame finished in high-gloss black.

New BMW Laserlights are designed ten millimetres narrower, with new daytime running light graphics that differentiate the new character of the models.

At the rear, the new BMW X3 M Competition gets more linear bumpers in high-gloss black, a new deeper rear diffuser and redesigned, three-dimensional taillights.

The rear of the BMW X4 M Competition is defined by vertically arranged reflectors and a wide apron with an anvil-shaped insert in high-gloss black, giving the vehicle a more low-slung stance and visually enhancing its width.

The BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition both feature recognisable M-specific differentiation such as an M Sport exhaust system with quad tailpipes finished in black chrome, as well as forged 21-inch M light alloy wheels that reduce unsprung weight at each corner by two kilograms.

High-revving engine from motor racing expertise

The in-line 6-cylinder engine in the BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition now features a forged lightweight crankshaft from the engine of the BMW M3 and M4 Competition.

Coupled with an extremely torsion-resistant design, the new crankshaft enables particularly high torque and 50 Nm more torque over its predecessors, while still maintaining the high-revving characteristics of a racing engine.

In addition to responsive revving and high power, the engine is also supremely versatile, and manages to maintain peak torque of 650 Nm between 2,750 and 5,500 rpm. Maximum output of 375 kW is achieved at 6,250 rpm, and is sustained all the way to the redline at 7,200 rpm.

This enhanced engine performance is effectively transferred to the road via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and an intelligent BMW M xDrive all-wheel drive system – enabling lightning straight line performance. The 0-100km/h sprint is completed by both cars in just 3.8 seconds.

The electronically controlled M xDrive – which is networked with the car’s DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system – is calibrated to retain BMW’s hallmark rear-drive characteristics, only sending power to the front axle when the rear wheels reach the limits of grip.

Superior driving dynamics in hallmark M style

The BMW X3 M Competition and the BMW X4 M Competition provide an exceptional level of driving dynamics.

Standard Adaptive M suspension with specific springs and new electronically controlled dampers provided an expanded level of adjustment, so that both cars provide a high level of comfort for everyday driving, but extremely direct road contact when desired.

An M-specific strut package reduces body roll and movement, while the electromechanical M Servotronic steering and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) are specifically calibrated to deliver a typical M driving experience.

In M Dynamic Mode, the M Sport differential equipped as standard allows additional wheel slip to generate oversteer qualities typical of M, enabling controlled drift manoeuvres when used on the race track, for example.

The performance characteristics of the BMW X3 M Competition and the BMW X4 M Competition are further complemented by efficient stopping power from the standard M compound brake system, finished in blue as standard or in high-gloss black or red on request.

At the touch of the ‘M Setup’ button on the centre control island, the driver can optimise specific elements of the vehicle’s chassis and powertrain, selecting optimum response levels for the engine and gearbox, steering and suspension damping characteristics, as well as brake responsiveness.

M typical interior with new accents

The BMW X3 M Competition and the BMW X4 M Competition carry over the design of the interior from the updated X3 and X4, including new island control designs and a larger 12.3-inch infotainment screen.

Unique to the mid-size M SUV/SAV siblings are M sports seats with an illuminated M logo as standard. Merino leather upholstery in four colour combinations are available as standard, with BMW Individual extended Merino leather upholstery in Tartufo also available on request.

Interior trims are finished in dark Rhombicle aluminium as standard, with a new open-pore ash variant available as an option.

The M leather steering wheel with multifunction also comes as standard, featuring contrast stitching in BMW M colours and an open 6 o'clock spoke.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional with integrated digital ecosystem

The new BMW X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition come equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, as standard with additional features specific to M models integrated within the digital instrumentation display system.

Digital M modes can be easily selected via the centre control island by selecting the ‘M mode’ button, while specific head-up display graphics provide an especially sporty driving experience, along with key driving information such as navigation, media and speed limit recognition data in the driver’s line of sight.

Innovative digital services based on BMW Operating System 7 bring features such as Remote Software Upgrade, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, and Driving Assistant Professional – enabling a highly integrated digital ecosystem of entertainment and assistance to the driver.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity is also offered on both cars, bringing native Apps from both operating systems straight onto the car’s information display.

Finally, a Harman Kardon surround sound system comes as standard for a superb audio experience.

CO2 emission information.

Fuel consumption, CO2 emission figures and power consumption and range were measured using the methods required according to Regulation VO (EC) 2007/715 as amended. They refer to vehicles on the German automotive market. For ranges, the NEDC figures take into account differences in the selected wheel and tyre size, while the WLTP figures take into account the effects of any optional equipment.

All figures have already been calculated based on the new WLTP test cycle. NEDC figures listed have been adjusted to the NEDC measurement method where applicable. WLTP values are used as a basis for the assessment of taxes and other vehicle-related duties which are (also) based on CO2 emissions and, where applicable, for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies. Further information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures is also available at www.bmw.de/wltp.

For further details of the official fuel consumption figures and official specific CO2 emissions of new cars, please refer to the “Manual on the fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and power consumption of new cars”, available at sales outlets free of charge, from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH (DAT), Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern-Scharnhausen and at https://www.dat.de/co2/.
