Knee shot: Kutscher standing next to the black-painted bodywork. Question: What was the starting point for this project? Statement: “BMW would like to demonstrate that we are able to deliver spare parts even for our historic products and we have guaranteed to deliver 90 percent of all spare parts for the 02-series and would like to document that by assembling a 02-series-car from spare parts.“Knee shot: Kutscher leaning against the BMW 2002 tii. Question: What’s the time frame for this project? Statement: ”We reckon that the estimated completion date ist going to be in one year so that the car will be able to hit the road and to take part in historic events.” Knee shot: Kutscher leaning against the BMW 2002 tii. Question: What steps are going to follow next? Statement: ”The car will make it’s way from the body shop directly to the paint shop and after that to the workshop where it will be assembled by us.”Knee shot: Kutscher next to the BMW 2002 tii. Question: Mounting the fenders is entirely manual work. Is this how it was in the past? Statement: “At that time it was a quite more extensive task. Today most of the vehicles are built with the help of plug- or adhesive connections, but also by welding. In former times the fenders were screwed together and had been tinned and soldered at the edges. In the 70ties this was the usual way of mounting.” Knee shot: Kutscher leaning against the BMW 2002 tii. Question: Are all parts going to be available? Statement: “Of course there are some parts like pieces of the interior equipment, seats or carpets which are undeliverable by BMW. So we have decided to cannibalize an old car for parts which we then replenished.”Knee shot: Kutscher leaning against the BMW 2002 tii. Question: What your personal attitude to this project, Mr. Kutscher? Statement: “In my point of view this project is also interesting because we are so often asked how prepared BMW is for the delivery of historic spare parts. And I think that we can prove our competence here and show how many parts we have on stock.”
Martin Deggelmann, panel beater.

Knee shot: Deggelmann in front of the bodywork. Question: What is happening here, what jobs are you doing at this time? Statement: “With tin we can create a metal-to-metal connection. If I had primed the gap here between the fender and the front end…the bodywork would later expand and shrink and over the years the surface would tear and burst. Of course, moisture would then infiltrate and lead to corrosion at that point. The paint would crack.”

Question: What colour is the BMW 2002 tii going to get? Statement: “The 2002-series-car was available in different signal-colours, the 70ies were affected by jazzy colours. And we decided to choose ‘Inka Orange’, which is a fashionable colour.”

Knee shot: Andreas Meissner Question: How many replacement parts does BMW have in stock? Statement: “We have 208,000 spare parts in stock, for both cars and motorbikes. But the largest chunk is for cars, of course.”Question: Where and how can I get replacement parts from BMW? Statement: “There is an opportunity to buy parts worldwide, we do not have a regional limitation, like maybe only for Germany or Europe. Every BMW-Dealer can offer parts for historic cars, worldwide.” Question: What can you tell us in terms of availability of the spare parts? Statement: “The availability of spare parts is guaranteed for a very long time. In the end it is our focus to keep cars on the road. That means to have a priority on parts which are important to pass a car through the Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV), such as brake systems which should be in stock. The next step is that we try to have remakes of sheet metal components for our customers. We are aiming at supplying 90 percent of spare parts for each model, just as we do for the 02-series.” Question: For how many years do you supply replacement parts? Statement: “As long as one model is seen on road, we try to keep the spare part supply running. But – of course – at some point there is a break even, so that profitability is not provided for any more. But you see, for an Isetta or the V8, or actually for the 02-series, we do have spare parts and try to do so for at least another 30 to 40 years.”

Knee shot: Sitting in the car. Question: What needs to be done first when fitting the roof interior? Statement: “At first you need to measure: length and width of the roof interior, then the position of the mirror in the middle, distances, length, how much must be sewed.”Question: How do you fix the roof interior? Statement: “This is a contact glue which is heat-resistant up to 110 degrees. It is completely possible to exhaust the air from around it and then it is reactivating through heat. That means, I’m able to fix it on the targeted point and detach it again. Then you can fix it with heat, so that it is not detachable anymore.” Question: Does it need talent to do this job? Statement: “Yes, it does. It demands a lot of crafting skills and experience. I mean, if you look at this, all you have to do is one wrong cut, a few millimeters to deep and it is possible to destroy the whole roof interior. And then you possibly have a damage which costs a few thousand Euros.”

Medium shot: in front of the finished BMW 2002 tii. Question: Is the Head of the Mobile Tradition a little proud on the 2002 tii? Statement: “It’s such a beautiful car. I mean, it was one of the reasons for the success story of BMW as it began in the 60s and now we have reconstructed up the car once again. A 2002 tii, year of manufacture 2006. In Inka-orange paint, I mean, this is a nice car for sure.”

Close: Holger Lapp. Question: What personal memories of the 02 model do you have? Statement: “Yes, I can rember that moment for sure. It was in 1962 when BMW’s new class was introduced at the IAA in Frankfurt. And it was a sensation, a sporty BMW with a lot of horsepower and a good road holding. And a few years later you could read in the car magazines: there will be an offshoot, a two-door-version with the same engines. From that point, we had huge expectations, the car was expected to be lighter and therefore more powerful and that finally became true. Experts and also the first customers really praised the new car.” Closeup: Holger Lapp Question: How significant was the 02 model for the BMW brand? Statement: “In fact the 02-series was the continuation of the success which had started with the new class. The run for the 1500, 1800 ti and 2000 ti 4-door-sedans was immense and something virtually unknown at BMW at that time. And it was even topped by the 02-series-car with 820,000 units produced and that was an unbelievable success for BMW.” Closeup: Holger Lapp Question: What does the 02 model mean for the Mobile Tradition today? Statement: “The 02-series-car has a huge importance, it is a so-called young timer and these cars become more and more important for the Mobile Tradition because BMW has a great potential with the 02-series-car, it’s a cult car which many people love and appreciate. And we see more and more events for such cult objects where owners of the 2002 take part.” Closeup: Holger Lapp Question: The 02 series made BMW famous even across the pond? Statement: “It was the car which started BMW’s story of success in the USA. Many units were sold there and that was the beginning of BMW’s success in the USA..”

Closeup: Klaus Kutscher Question: How was the idea born to realize this project? Statement: “We sat down together and were just joking that this car should get a remake because it had become so popular and so famous at BMW. And because of that joke we said that we could deliver 90 percent of all spare parts for that car. Let us built up a new car.”
Georg Blumoser, BMW Mobile Tradition, Head of Engineering and Service.

Closeup: Georg Blumoser Question: What can you tell us in terms of availability of the engine? Statement: “The engine is still manufactured at the BMW factory in Landshut. We produce replacement gearboxes. We get back used units, renew them completely and offer them for replacement. We’ve used such a re-manufactured engine which is now mounted. A completely new engine, if I might say so.” Closeup: Georg Blumoser Question: Are the replacement parts always brand-new, never used before? Statement: “Parts of the gearbox, entire gearboxes or rear axles are also re-manufactured and then offered for replacement.” Closeup: Georg Blumoser Question: How many individual parts does the 02 consist of? Statement: “We do not have exact data, we have not counted the parts. But we estimate that there are four or five thousand parts in the car.”

Closeup: Arthur Heimann Question: There is actually no manual for assembling the 02 model? Statement: “It’s all about experience. If you put something together and you see that it doesn’t make sense, than you have to think about what’s right or wrong. Then you have to remove it and install it again, but the experience will help you through.”

Male 1: “I would certainly like this one, as I have one with mint-green color. That’s why I’m looking at this one and start to think what I can do with mine.” Male 1: “That’s been my first car, and thank God I have kept it for so long. And now I would really enjoy if it looked just like this one here.” Male 1: “Well, it was my first car when I turned 18, and I drove it quite a lot of years… that makes for plenty of memories.” Male 2: “This car had a great road ability, just super. One hundred per cent in terms of slalom and handling.” Male 2: „There are so few of them on the roads today. Sure, when there’s the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nurburg Racing Track, there you see more of them. But when you’re cruising around town, tell me, where do you still see a ’02? They have become rare, haven’t they?” Female 1: “First of all I think this is a great idea. I don’t know whether it was born in the club circles or at BMW itself, but the idea itself is fantastic. And at first glance, the car has become very good... but there are some little things you could criticize, but you don’t have to.” Female 1: “I think it’s important to set value on history, and at BMW, there’s such a huge club and fan community which maintains this hobby... I can tell from my own experience: Once you have had such a car, it is not easy to get away from it again. You will find it difficult to part with such a car. I have not managed to sell even one of the three ‘02s I have at home, I just keep them. And then it’s good to know that replacement parts are still supplied.” Male 3: “Right now I am restoring an 02 Targa model and I can say I do have fun with this kind of vehicle. That’s something from my youth, the dream cars of my youth that we couldn't afford back at that time.“
