Ein Dieselmotor in einem BMW? Zu Beginn der 1980er-Jahre war diese Kombination für viele Fans der Marke nur schwer vorstellbar. Die damals bekannten Dieselmotoren galten als laut und wenig sportlich. Allein ihr hoher Wirkungsgrad und die damit verbundene Sparsamkeit sprachen für diese Antriebsform.
