A diesel engine in a BMW? At the beginning of the 1980s, this combination was virtually inconceivable for many fans of the brand. The diesel engines known at the time were regarded as loud and not very sporty. However, the high level of efficiency and the associated fuel-efficiency commended this type of engine. In the wake of the oil crisis, BMW therefore developed initial plans already in 1975 to launch a diesel engine, which went into series production just three years later. Right from the start, it was clear that a diesel engine from BMW would have to feature some very special qualities.
