Singapore. BMW M GmbH is unveiling the third generation of its high-performance executive-class Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) models. BMW Asia and Performance Munich Autos today announced the launch of the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition – these two models deliver handling agility, dynamism, and precision unmatched in their class. Their superior performance attributes combine with the versatility, extrovert design, and modern luxury of which BMW X models are renowned.

A V8 engine developing 625 hp, an M-specific chassis that has been tailored to both the engine’s performance profile and the SAV / SAC vehicle concept, as well as design features taken from the M playbook ensure imposing power and supremely controllable handling, even at the dynamic limits. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is dispatched in a mere 3.8 seconds for both models – the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition clocks the 0 to 200 km/h sprint in 13.4 seconds, and the first-ever BMW X6 M Competition stops the clock at 13.2 seconds for the same sprint. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The intoxicating all-round performance package benefits from fine-tuning carried out during intensive testing at the BMW Group’s proving grounds, the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and other race tracks.

Significant power hike: high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology developing 625 hp.

M TwinPower Turbo technology and the appetite for revs shared by all M models give the latest-generation V8 engine fitted in the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition an unmistakable performance profile. Its headline character traits are instant response to the slightest movement of the accelerator, precisely controllable power delivery, and a linear wave of power into the upper echelons of the rev range under full throttle.

The 4.4-litre engine teams up with two turbochargers – positioned in the “V” between the cylinder banks – whose impact is further enhanced by a cross-bank exhaust manifold. Torque peaks at 750 Nm between 1,800 and 5,800 rpm, while the maximum output of 625 hp arrives at 3,000 rpm. The power unit’s firm connection to the vehicle’s structure results in remarkably instantaneous engine response and direct transmission of its power to the drivetrain. A super-stiff engine mounting results also makes the car sharper on turn-in while dampening the transmission of engine noise to the cabin. The M Sport exhaust system captures all of the engine’s free-revving eagerness and propulsive power to thrilling effect, generating a soundtrack of particular emotional richness.

Precise power transfer: eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, M xDrive and Active M Differential.

The high-performance engine in the two Competition models teams up with the latest version of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, whose gearshift characteristics can be adjusted using the Drivelogic button on the M-specific selector lever. The driver may also opt to use the M shift paddles on the steering wheel for manual control over the gear selection process.

The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with bespoke tuning and the Active M Differential at the rear axle have been specially tuned to transfer drive to the road with characteristic élan. The two systems thus optimise traction, agility, and handling stability when the cars’ sporting capabilities are put to the test in all terrains. In the default 4WD setting, the M xDrive displays a conspicuous rear-wheel bias – it only brings the front axle into play when the rear wheels aren’t able to transmit any more power to the road, and additional tractive force is required. However, the driver can also dip into the Setup menu to select 4WD Sport mode to bring extra intensity to the driving experience, in which an even greater proportion of the engine’s torque is directed to the rear wheels.

M-specific chassis, integrated braking system.

Pulse-quickening on-road dynamism and unsurpassed ground-covering ability over off-road terrain set the tone for the new high-performance additions to the SAV and SAC segments. The first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition are fitted with extensive measures to optimise the stiffness of the body structure and suspension mountings. The model-specific design and tuning of the chassis technology also helps enhance handling precision. Standard specification includes the adaptive M suspension system with electronically controlled dampers, the active roll stabilisation system, and M Servotronic steering. The stiff suspension mountings on both models enable damper control to be extremely precise. The electric swivel motors on the active roll stabilization system have a high adjustment torque, enabling extremely direct damper response when absorbing bumps on the road surface or taming body roll.

M compound brakes offer outstanding stopping power combined with supreme feel and excellent comfort. The version of the integrated braking system developed for BMW M models presents the driver with two settings for brake pedal feel – COMFORT mode allows for comfort-oriented feedback, while SPORT mode makes for an extremely direct, instantaneous response.

Extrovert design, variable-use interior, luxurious ambience.

The shared racing focus of the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition models is emphasised by their striking exterior designs. The combination of typical SAV / SAC proportions with signature M design features lends the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition an extrovert appearance exuding supreme authority in any environment.

Large air intakes, M gills on the front side panels, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors, a roof / rear spoiler, a rear apron with diffuser elements and the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes lay the technical platform required to deliver standout performance. The Competition models come with distinctive design highlights, among them the BMW Laserlights feature, as well as exclusive M light-alloy wheels in 21-inch format at the front axle and 22-inch at the rear (first-ever BMW X5 M Competition: Star-spoke style 809 M Bicolour, first-ever BMW X6 M Competition: Star-spoke style 818 M Bicolour). The different rim diameters also combine with mixed tyres to optimise transmission of lateral control forces through dynamically taken corners.

Inside the high-performance models, abundant space, top-class materials, and build quality radiating precise craftsmanship create a luxurious ambience. The classy, contemporary style of the cabin is complemented by displays and controls with the familiar M treatment – the bespoke M controls, and the red splashes of colour adorning the M leather steering wheel’s M buttons plus the Start/Stop button on the centre console help the driver to dial fully into the dynamic driving experience. The restyled selector is trimmed in leather with an embossed M logo and stitching in M GmbH colours, and includes the Drivelogic switch. It also incorporates an eye-catching cut-out accentuated by the integral ambient lighting.

Both models feature a fine-grain Merino full leather trim with M-specific hexagonal quilting – this is also used for the door trim panels, the lower section of the instrument panel, the front seat backs, the door panelling, and the door pockets in leather too. A BMW Individual headliner in Alcantara anthracite is also available as standard. The luxurious interior ambience is further continued with features such as the soft-close function, as well as a Harmon Kardon sound system fitted as standard on the Competition models.

Operating system creates intense M feeling; exclusive standard equipment.

A Setup button on the centre console enables direct access to the settings for the engine, dampers, steering, M xDrive and braking system. Two individually composed variants of this M setup can be stored and called up at any time by pressing one of the two red M buttons on the steering wheel. Added to which, the information shown in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display and the functionality of the driver assistance systems can both be varied using the M Mode button on the centre console.

In addition to ROAD and SPORT settings, the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition feature a TRACK setting designed exclusively for use on race circuits. Switching to SPORT or TRACK mode reduces the amount of information appearing in the displays. In addition, the safety-enhancing interventions initiated by the driver assistance systems – such as active braking or steering inputs – are reduced to a bare minimum or deactivated altogether. The exclusive selection of equipment fitted as standard includes the BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific readouts, M multifunction seats for the driver and front passenger, and the BMW Display Key. Both models also come with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with navigation system and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant as standard.

The Driving Assistant Professional package provides the best in comfort and safety with features such as the Steering and lane control assistant, the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection, the Lane Change Assistant, the Evasion Assistant, the Emergency Stop Assistant and the Crossroads warning, Wrong-way warning and Front Cross Traffic Alert systems. The standard-fit Parking Assistant Plus comes to the driver’s aid when selecting and manoeuvring into parking spaces – in addition, the system includes Active Park Distance Control and camera system allowing for the Top View, Panorama View, 3D Top View and Remote 3D View functions. The Reversing Assistant also forms part of standard equipment.

The first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition are now available for viewing at the Performance Munich Autos showroom.
