Oschersleben (26th August 2007). Formula BMW Germany contested its 11th and
12th races in glorious sunshine this weekend. Saturday's race at the Motorsport
Arena Oschersleben saw Jens Klingmann (Leimen/Eifelland Racing) take victory
ahead of Philipp Eng (AUT/ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg) and Daniel Campos-Hull
(ESP/Eifelland Racing). On Sunday it was rookie Marco Wittmann (Markt
Erlbach/Josef Kaufmann Racing) who crossed the line first to celebrate his
debut win. "I'm absolutely thrilled. I've got to call the management right
away," said Wittmann, who comes under the wing of Willi Weber. In second and
third place behind the 17-year-old were Klingmann and Eng.
"I managed to recover my lead in the rankings, and I want to hold onto it all
the way to the final in Hockenheim," averred Klingmann, who after 12 out of 18
races now leads by just one point over his strongest rival, Campos-Hull (461
points). The latest switch in positions shows just how close the battle for the
overall rankings is. Following his win, Wittmann is now in third place (420
points) with Eng eight points adrift of him in fourth. "My goal for the end of
the season is to be in the top three," declared the Austrian in fighting spirit.
After Wittmann - who started Sunday's race from first place on the grid - and
Klingmann managed to ease away from the rest of the field relatively quickly, a
scrap for position broke out behind them. Maximilian Wissel (Hörstein/GU
Racing) in third place had Eng repeatedly breathing down his neck. After the
two cars clashed, Wissel eventually dropped back to eighth place. The close
competition in Formula BMW Germany has already produced five different race
winners: Klingmann (7 wins), Campos-Hull (2 wins), Eng (1 win), Wissel (1 win)
and Wittmann (1 win).
Jörg Müller, currently one of the three BMW works drivers leading the FIA World
Touring Car Championship, made sure he was among the spectators watching the
Formula BMW Germany races. On Saturday he presented the trophies to the junior
drivers. "It's impressive to see the professional way in which so many drivers
approach this series," said the man from Hückelhoven. On Sunday the drivers on
the podium were handed their trophies by two-times world champion Andy Priaulx.
"An exciting formula series with lots of talent," said a clearly impressed BMW
Team UK driver. For races 13 and 14 in this Formula BMW Germany season, the
young racing drivers will be heading for the Nürburgring on the first weekend
of September (31.8.-2.9.).
