BMW plays leading role with regard to diesel particulate filter. All diesel cars will feature filters in 2006 as standard equipment. Retrofitting for already delivered vehicles.

Munich. BMW Group has already proceeded very far in achieving its aim of
equipping all models with standard-equipment particulate filters as fast as
possible. Up to 2006 all BMW diesel models will come with particulate filters
right from the factory. Parallel to this, BMW will offer retrofit solutions for
models already on the market.

Already in March 2004, long before the current debate about the EU fine dust
regulations began, BMW played a pioneering role when it introduced a
maintenance-free particulate filter as standard for the first time.

Compared to other systems already on the market, the BMW system avoids the use
of additives and requires no extensive service over lifetime. Neither does the
BMW system affect engine power nor does it increase fuel consumption.

With its commitment BMW stands at the forefront of the manufacturers who are
now including the best available technology into their cars as quickly as
possible.

Hereby the automotive industry fulfils its responsibility towards the
environment.

Since emissions of diesel passenger cars in cities contribute to only about ten
percent to the total fine dust emissions a significant reduction of
particulates cannot be achieved by the particulate filter alone. The automotive
industry therefore assumes, that also other emitters of fine dust - like waste
combustors or heating plants - take according measures. Only when the measures
of all emitters turn to reality, emissions in future can fall below the level
anticipated.

Since March 2004, the particulate filter has been in use in the 5 Series and in
the meantime is also built into the 3 and 7 Series. The 1 Series and the X3
will follow in 2005, the X5 in 2006. At the same time vehicles that had been
delivered without filters will have retrofit options available via BMW
dealerships.
Since the technology was introduced, BMW has already manufactured well above
100,000 vehicles with standard-equipment particulate filters.
In Germany alone 5,800 BMWs with particulate filters have been registered in
the first two months of the year.

In order to safeguard planning for customers and manufacturers alike, BMW
awaits from politics a quick finalization of the tax promotion discussion for
particulate filters.
