BMW diesel particulate filters for all model series.
Munich. BMW has already proceeded very far on the way to equipping all its
diesel models with particulate filters as standard.
As Dr. Helmut Panke, Chairman of the Board of the BMW Group, announced to
journalists yesterday, BMW will be one of the first manufacturer to have
particulate filters available for all model series in autumn 2005.
In March 2004 - long before the current discussion regarding the EU fine
particulate regulations began -BMW was the first manufacturer to install a new
type of particulate filter in all BMW 5 Series models as standard.
For the first time a customer-friendly system was available in large-scale
production, which requires no servicing in a car's lifetime, functions without
additives, does not increase fuel consumption and does not require special
engine oil qualities.
BMW has successively and consistently expanded the application of this
sustainable filter technology so that all BMW 1 Series, new 3 Series, 5 Series
and 7 Series models are available with it meanwhile. The BMW X3 and X5 will
follow in autumn.
There is good news also regarding the retrofit solutions. Starting in autumn
2005, BMW plans to offer retrofit kits for many current and earlier model
series not yet fitted with a filter. This includes most models of the last 3
Series.
Since the exhaust emissions produced by passenger cars are only responsible for
about ten percent of the fine particulate matter, it is not possible to
significantly reduce particulate with particulate filters alone. This is why
BMW expects that respective measures will be introduced for other particulate
emitters, for example communal waste incineration plants or heating systems.
Only if all particulate generators comply with these measures will it be
possible to remain under the very demanding limits in the future.
