Munich. With four body variations, the widest range of engines in the segment,
uncompromising premium quality and even more innovations, the BMW 1 Series
consolidates its position as the epitome of modern driving fun in the model
year 2009. Two new 4-cylinder diesel engines for the BMW 1 Series Convertible
offer additional options for combining the love of open-top driving with
exemplary efficiency. The new generation of BMW iDrive, the possibility of
unlimited internet use inside the vehicle and other equipment details based on
state-of-the-art technology drawn from higher segments and unique in this
vehicle category underscore the premium character of the BMW 1 Series as do the
refined details of its interior. The compact BMW takes on a pioneering role in
the area of emissions reduction. In autumn 2008, seven models of the BMW 1
Series already fulfil the requirements for adherence to the future exhaust
emissions norm EU5.
The most state-of-the-art chassis in the segment and rear-wheel drive - still
unique in the compact class - form the basis of the outstanding agility of the
5-door, 3-door, Coupe and Convertible models of the BMW 1 Series. The spectrum
of engines is also of unsurpassed breadth, ranging from 90 kW/122 bhp in the
BMW 116i to 225 kW/306 bhp in the BMW 135i. The modern engines owe their high
performance among other things to pioneering technologies such as VALVETRONIC,
Twin Turbo and Variable Twin Turbo.
Equally unsurpassed: BMW EfficientDynamics measures fitted as standard.
Depending on the specific model in question, this includes measures such as
High Precision Injection, common rail diesel injection of the third generation,
needs-based operation of the electromechanical steering, automatic air intake
flaps to optimise aerodynamics, Auto Start Stop Function and gear shift
indicator. All versions of the BMW 1 Series have Brake Energy Regeneration and
intelligent auxiliary units. The result is an unequalled combination of driving
fun and fuel consumption - just recently recognised internationally with the
"World Green Car of the Year Award" for the BMW 118d.
Increased efficiency and dynamic performance: new 4-cylinder diesel engines for
the BMW 118d Convertible and the BMW 123d Convertible.
The 2.0 litre, 105 kW/143 bhp 4-cylinder diesel engine of the model which was
voted "World Green Car of the Year" in 2008 is now also available for the BMW 1
Series Convertible. The new BMW 118d Convertible accelerates in 9.5 seconds
from zero to 100 km/h and sets new standards for open-top four-seater vehicles
with its average fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres in the EU
test cycle and a CO2 emissions level of 129 grams per kilometre.
Other superlatives are provided by the second new version of the BMW 1 Series
Convertible available in autumn 2008. In the BMW 123d Convertible, the world's
first all-aluminium diesel engine with a rated output of over 100 bhp per litre
of capacity ensures enormous pulling power combined with impressive economic
efficiency. Piezo injectors feed the fuel at a pressure of up to 2000 bar into
the four combustion chambers. The Variable Twin Turbo Technology provides
spontaneous and lasting thrust, with an output of 150 kW/204 bhp and a maximum
torque of 400 Nm. The BMW 123d Convertible accelerates in just 7.5 seconds from
zero to 100 km/h. Its average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 5.4
litres per 100 kilometres, and its CO2 level is 144 grams per kilometre.
The new BMW iDrive: Controller with direct selection buttons, large, fixed
Control Display, optimised menu structure.
In conjunction with an optional navigation system, the BMW 1 Series is fitted
with the pioneering operating system BMW iDrive. It is the only vehicle in its
segment which provides this type of operating system, originally developed for
the luxury performance segment. The new generation of BMW iDrive will be
presented as of autumn 2008 - and immediately introduced to the BMW 1 Series.
It enables even simpler and more intuitive control of entertainment,
communication, navigation and comfort functions. The new iDrive for the BMW 1
Series keeps up the principle of clear separation between control elements and
display and is characterised by such features as a fixed Control Display in the
instrument panel and a newly designed Controller complete with direct selection
buttons.
The new iDrive Controller is placed in an ergonomically ideal position in the
centre console and enables convenient, intuitive selection and activation of
functions by means of standardised tilt, rotation and pressure movements.
Another new feature is the addition of seven direct selection buttons in the
environment of the Controller. These provide direct access to the most
important menu options and can be operated without eye contact due to their
varying haptic shape. Instead of the previous fold-up display, a fixed Control
Display is used in the BMW 1 Series for the model year 2009 to ensure optimised
display of menu options, graphics and maps. The Control Display is placed at
the same level as the instrument panel in all BMW models and is at perfect
viewing distance for both the driver and the front passenger.
Navigation System Professional in the BMW 1 Series: travel companion at luxury
performance level with full screen display, preview maps, 3D symbols and guided
tours.
In conjunction with the Navigation System Professional a new display technology
is also used in the BMW 1 Series, including an optimised menu structure. With a
very high resolution of 1280 x 480 pixels - four times that of the previous
generation of iDrive - the display offers significantly improved display of
detailed graphics. Lean menu structures and a system of superimposed menu
panels familiar from computer technology facilitate orientation. Visual
operational aids such as a displayed image of the Controller itself ensure
additional clarity. The spelling of place and street names and the entry of
telephone numbers is undertaken by means of a circular instrument known as a
speller.
The Navigation System Professional provides full-screen map display. Travel
maps, details of the surroundings and symbols for places of interest can be
shown as three-dimensional graphics. When selecting a navigation destination
based on a list of towns, a preview map also appears in the display for each
suggested destination during selection. This enables different towns with the
same name to be more easily distinguished based on geographical information.
The travel planner with guided tours function links a number of different
destinations to create an individualised travel route, and the driver can also
integrate his own interim stopping points within the route plan if so desired.
Accelerated access times are ensured due to the fact that navigation data is
installed on an 80 GB hard drive in the vehicle. The latter can also be used as
a music archive and music files can be transferred onto it from a CD, external
MP3 player or USB stick. The music files are then permanently available. For
the first time, the familiar bookmark buttons in the centre console can be used
to save and directly select any menu items accessible via iDrive, in addition
to radio stations, telephone numbers and navigation destinations - for example
map displays or the telephone address book.
Only available from BMW, now in the BMW 1 Series too: unlimited internet access
inside the vehicle.
The further developed iDrive also provides the basis for using internet in the
vehicle. As of autumn 2008, BMW will be the first automobile manufacturer in
the world to provide optional, unlimited internet access. Here, the Controller
performs a similar function to that of a conventional computer mouse. Internet
pages can be display on the Control Display in high resolution. An additional
function enables screen sections to be enlarged so as to focus on details.
Internet access is available for the BMW 1 Series as an optional extra at
attractive flat-rate conditions. For safety reasons the display of internet
pages is only possible when the vehicle is stationary, as in BMW models with TV
function.
BMW ConnectedDrive with extended Remote Services.
Another reflection of the premium character of the BMW 1 Series is the wide
variety in the range of telematics and online services offered under the
umbrella of BMW ConnectedDrive. In the model year 2009 the range of these
services is further extended. For example, the newly developed Remote Services
will also be available for the BMW 1 Series as part of the BMW Assist services.
Whenever the vehicle key is left in the locked luggage compartment or the
driver is not sure whether he has locked the vehicle after parking in a hurry,
it is enough to simply phone the BMW Call Centre. After unmistakable
identification, a staff member at the BMW Call Centre can then remotely lock or
unlock the vehicle. Another function of the new Remote Services of BMW
ConnectedDrive is the vehicle finder. Especially useful in large car parks,
this service enables the vehicle to be located to the nearest metre using light
or acoustic signals.
Integrated smartphone use in the BMW 1 Series with new snap-in adapter
including USB connection.
As of autumn 2008 the BMW 1 Series provides the perfect conditions for
enjoyment of state-of-the-art communication and entertainment technology in the
vehicle. A new snap-in adapter in the accessory range and a matching USB
circuit board as an optional extra makes it possible to fully integrate current
smartphone models in the BMW 1 Series. With the option of extended connection
of the music player in a mobile phone it is possible to use both the
communication and the entertainment functions of the phone and control them
using the iDrive operating system. Telephone numbers and music titles stored in
the smartphone are then shown in the Control Display. The power supply to the
smartphone and reception via car aerial are also taken care of. The new
interface can be used for the integration of the mobile phones Apple iPhone,
Sony Ericsson K850i and Nokia 6500c.
New equipment features at state-of-the-art premium level.
In the field of driver assistance systems, too, the high standard of optional
equipment available contributes to the premium character of the BMW 1 Series.
In the model year 2009 there are additional attractive and innovative options
available. For the first time a high beam assistant is offered for the models
of the BMW 1 Series. The system automatically activates the low beam as soon as
oncoming traffic comes into view or when the distance to traffic ahead falls
below a defined level. A rain sensor with automatic road light control will
also be available from autumn 2008. This system automatically activates the
windscreen wipers and low beam in relation to the weather and daylight. The
optionally available steering wheel heating provides an additional feelgood
factor in the cold season.
As an additional safety feature, the 3-door and 5-door models of the BMW 1
Series will be fitted as standard with crash-optimised seatbacks and headrests
for the driver and front passenger seat as of autumn 2008, reducing the risk of
injury to the cervical spine in the event of a rear-on collision. The list of
new features for the BMW 1 Series is rounded off with new options for visual
individualisation of the vehicle. The range of exterior paint finishes has been
extended with the addition of a particularly high-quality and modern colour:
Space Grey metallic. To match this, decor strips are available for the interior
in Satin Silver matt, providing a sporty, modern touch.
