Munich, April 30, 2013. The class of 2013 in the Formula BMW Talent Cup has successfully completed a comprehensive training programme at its first on-track event of the year in Calafat, Spain. Each driver spent a good 200 laps at the wheel of the Formula BMW FB02 single-seater racing car over the course of the three training days at the 3.250-kilometre Circuit de Calafat, which is located about 140 kilometres south-west of Barcelona. The talented youngsters, who are receiving comprehensive preparation for a successful career in professional racing courtesy of BMW, also had to undergo more fitness tests. Technical workshops and extensive media training completed the first of seven practical training modules on the way to the “Grand Final” in autumn 2013.
“For the drivers, the on-track event in Calafat was an important step in their training. This was the first time the entire class had taken to the track in the Formula BMW FB02,” said BMW works driver and head instructor Dirk Adorf. “The participants not only had to adapt to a demanding circuit, but also faced other challenges to their driving ability, courtesy of the constantly fluctuating weather conditions. The event in Calafat successfully established the basis for future training, on which the next session will build, when the youngsters take part in their first simulator event.” The next multi-day training unit commences in less than two weeks’ time in the simulator at the iZone Performance Centre in Silverstone (GB).
After the event in Silverstone, further on-track events are scheduled on other European racetracks, as well as theory modules focussing on fitness, performance and media training, before the participants arrive at the highlight of this year’s Formula BMW Talent Cup in September 2013. The “Grand Final” will be held as part of the DTM race weekend in Oschersleben (DE), with BMW financing the winner of the final races for a complete season in a higher-level racing series.
