Victories for the BMW S 1000 RR at the WSBK weekend at Motorland Aragón, in South Africa and in Great Britain.

Munich, 15th April 2015. The privateer BMW Motorrad riders were successful again last weekend: they claimed victories on four different continents on their BMW S 1000 RRs. Meanwhile, the number of participants in the 2015 BMW Motorrad Race Trophy continues to grow. Forty nine BMW Motorrad privateers have already registered for this special competition. With the season already underway in some championships, the first standings are now available.

FIM World Superbike Championship in Alcañiz, Spain.

The FIM World Superbike Championship kicked off the European leg of its season with the third race weekend of the year at Motorland Aragón in Alcañiz (ES). On hand to support their customer teams with their daily routine in the pit lane were the experts from BMW Motorrad Motorsport. Saturday’s Superpole qualifying saw Ayrton Badovini (IT) from the BMW Motorrad Italia SBK Team qualify sixth fastest to land his BMW S 1000 RR on the second row of the grid. In Sunday’s opening race he was running eighth until the closing stages, when he crashed out. Badovini then came home ninth in race two to claim the RR’s first top-ten result of the WSBK season. Imre Toth (HU) from BMW Racing Team Toth finished 18th and 20th. His team-mate Gabor Rizmayer (HU) returned to action after a long injury break: he had broken his wrist during practice at the season-opener in Phillip Island (AU) at the end of February, but was back to make his first appearance of the season at Motorland Aragón. Rizmayer was 19th in race one, but did not start the second race.

FIM Superstock 1000 Cup in Alcañiz, Spain.

The 2015 season of the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup (WSTK) opened with an absolute thriller – and a victory for the BMW S 1000 RR – as it shared the bill with the WSBK weekend in Motorland Aragón. Sunday’s opening race featured a field of no fewer than 33 riders. Among them was BMW Motorrad privateer Roberto Tamburini (IT / Team MotoxRacing), who started from second place on the front row of the grid. He spent the entire race among the front-runners at the head of the field, before launching the decisive overtaking manoeuvre on the final corner. Shortly before the finish, Tamburini surprised the leader at the time, moving into the lead to secure his first win of the year on the RR. Fabio Marchionni (IT) crossed the finish line in 19th on the RR fielded by TR. Corse. Federico D’Annunzio (IT / FDA Racing Team) did not finish.

FIM Sidecar World Championship in Donington, Great Britain.

The FIM Sidecar World Championship (SWC) kicked off the 2015 season in Donington (GB) last weekend – and the BMW Motorrad privateers were successful there too. At the end of a hard-fought race, the Finnish BMW duo of Pekka Päivärinta / Kirsi Kainulainen (44-Racing) came home in third. In doing so, they made history: Kainulainen became the first female passenger for 40 years to make it onto the World Championship podium. The Finns were subsequently moved up a place into second following the disqualification of one of the bikes that had finished ahead of them. Mike Roscher (DE) and Anna Burkard (CH) finished fifth on their Roscher-Burkhard-Penz13 machine, while Uwe Gürck (DE) and Manfred Wechselberger (DE) of Polizei Sport Verein Wels failed to finish.

South African Motorcycle Championship in Pretoria, South Africa.

The South African Motorcycle Championship (SAM) also saw a BMW Motorrad privateer climb onto the top step of the podium last weekend: Lance Isaacs (ZA), riding a BMW S 1000 RR fielded by the Black Swan Racing team, claimed his first win of the season in the SuperGP class at the Zwartkorps Raceway in Pretoria (ZA). In dry conditions, Isaacs finished third in the first of the two races. It then started to rain shortly before the start of race two. Isaacs called on all of his experience of racing in the rain, taking full advantage of the potential of his new RR to come home more than 30 seconds ahead of his closest rival. The win also gave him overall victory in the day’s standings. Nicholas Kershaw (ZA) finished seventh and fifth on his Tsunami Beach Bar BMW S 1000 RR.

MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Superbike Championship in Austin, US.

Last weekend heralded a new era in the USA: the new MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Superbike Championship (AMA) started its debut season at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin (US). Among those riders competing in the Superbike class was a BMW Motorrad privateer: Matthew Orange (US) came home eighth on his BMW S 1000 RR in the opening race, but failed to finish race two. Three BMW S 1000 RRs raced in the Superstock 1000 class. Marcel Irnie (CA) finished 12th and eighth, Carlos Lescale (US) was ninth and 11th, while Eddie Thornton (US) crossed the finish line in 11th and 12th.

Road Racing: Martin wins at the Spring Cup in Scarborough, Great Britain.

The British road racing scene assembled on Oliver’s Mount in Scarborough (GB) for the traditional “Spring Cup” last weekend, and the Tyco BMW team claimed its first win with the new BMW S 1000 RR. Guy Martin (GB) won Saturday’s opening race and then finished fourth in tricky conditions on Sunday. This proved enough to secure overall victory at the “Spring Cup” for Martin, the team and the RR.

BMW Motorrad Race Trophy 2015: Lussiana is the first leader.

The field of riders in the 2015 BMW Motorrad Race Trophy continues to grow. So far, a total of 49 BMW Motorrad privateers from 15 countries, competing in 16 different classes in 13 championships, have signed up. And the first standings of the 2015 season are now available. The scoring period for the 2015 BMW Motorrad Race Trophy runs from 17th November 2014 to 22nd November 2015. Any results achieved by the participants in their respective championships during this period count towards the overall standings – therefore, races completed after the end of the 2014 Race Trophy also count towards this year’s competition. For example, this is the case for the two riders currently ranked first and second in the overall standings: the current leader is Matthieu Lussiana (FR), who races in the Moto 1000 GP class (MT1GP GP) of the Brazilian Superbike Championship (BRSBK), with 88.89 points. Second place is occupied by Lance Isaacs from the South African Motorcycle Championship with 78.00 points. Both competed in races at the end of 2014. The man currently third is Emeric Jonchiere (FR) from the French Superbike Championship (FSBK). (See below for the complete standings.)

In 2015, the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy comprises a total of 19 international and national championships. Registration is possible until 30th June 2015. Participants in the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy can once again compete in multiple championships in 2015. However, the points scored in the different championships are not added together, but are calculated separately for each individual race series. The current standings only include points from the race series in which the participant has scored the most Race Trophy points.
