Munich. The John Cooper Works tuning kit, which transforms the MINI
Cooper S into an absolute driving machine, can now be ordered as
optional equipment readily fitted at the factory. In addition to a
power boost to 154 kW/210 bhp and an increase in torque to 245 Nm at
4,500 rpm, the package includes high-performance brakes, great
acoustics, a limited slip differential for even better traction,
stylish wheels and endless driving fun. Committed to tradition: MINI
and John Cooper Works. For more than four decades now the name John
Cooper has been synonymous with the sporting character of MINI
automobiles. As a MINI associate of many years' standing, John Cooper
Works has designed a tuning kit for the top-of-the-range models MINI
Cooper S and MINI Cooper S Convertible, with which the nimble
four-seater car achieves remarkable performance. Mike Cooper, son of
motor racing legend John Cooper and owner of John Cooper Works based in
Sussex in the South of England, is thrilled that his tuning kits are
now being installed before the cars leave the factory. "This is
proof to all concerned of just how close and successful our
collaboration with MINI is. I therefore believe that we will be able to
continue in future to provide our customers with many attractive and
high performance products". Mike Cooper has been heavily involved
in the introduction of these exciting new cars at Oxford. Accompanied
by Dr. Heiss, head of the Oxford plant, and having personally overseen
the installation of the first tuning kits at the assembly line, Cooper
commented: "I was most delighted with the Oxford team. The calm
and professional way the employees went about their work and the
standard of competence are truly impressive. I am now convinced that my
tuning kits are in good hands at Oxford". Until now, the tuning
kit was only available as a retrofitted accessory. However, with
immediate effect, the particularly sports-minded customer can order a
MINI Cooper S model featuring a manual gearbox with the John Cooper
Works tuning kit readily fitted at an additional cost of 4,680 Euros.
Delivery of the first cars featuring this optional high-performance
equipment will commence in October 2005. Thoroughbred sports car with
compact dimensions. Thanks to selected "ingredients", the
tuned MINI Cooper S accelerates to 62 mph from a standstill in a mere
6.6 seconds (Convertible: 6.8 seconds). Those wishing to get even more
out of the acceleration can do so until the top speed of 230 km/h (143
mph) is reached (Convertible: 223 km/h; 139 mph). Likewise, pulling
force is most impressive, the six-speed athlete sprinting in fourth
gear from 50 to 75 mph in just 5.4 seconds (Convertible: 5.9 seconds).
Fuel consumption is 8.6 ltr/100 km in the combined EU cycle
(Convertible: 8.8 ltr/100 km). Safety first. As adequate braking
power is equally as important as performance and sporty road-handling,
John Cooper Works has provided the compact driving machine with even
greater braking efficiency. The powerful sports brakes provide even
better deceleration to suit the increased engine output and remain
extremely stable even under the highest strain. This is achieved by
means of larger brake discs, red lacquered brake callipers at the front
with larger diameter brake pistons, as well as specially designed brake
linings. 16-inch Bridge Spoke rims ensure that the brakes are adequately
cooled and are also very stylish. Alternatively however, customers can
opt for 17-inch wheels from the MINI product range. The package
includes a mechanical limited slip differential for optimal traction
and safe handling even when the car is driven to its limits. More power
and performance for the MINI Cooper S. Basis of the John Cooper Works
tuning kit for the MINI Cooper S models is a new compressor that
replaces the standard version and increases engine speed, thereby
noticeably boosting supercharging pressure. This necessitates a vast
range of further modifications to the entire MINI Cooper S engine, this
being the only way to fully achieve the desired harmonized performance
of the tuning kit as a whole. For example, the air filter has an
additional intake flap that opens at 4,500 rpm, ensuring that the power
unit, which boasts increased compressor output, is adequately
aspirated. A welcome side effect for sports-minded MINI enthusiasts:
just listen to that sound! Thanks to the additional air filter flap, the
acoustics of the MINI Cooper S are simply awesome. On the other hand, an
increased supercharging pressure requires optimised flow behaviour
inside the cylinder head. The intake and outlet ports have been adapted
to suit the modified conditions. New high-performance spark plugs,
injectors with increased flow capacity and an adapted engine management
system facilitate optimum fuel efficiency. Consumption is 8.6 ltr/100
km (Convertible: 8.8 ltr/100km) in an ECE cycle, a moderate figure if
we consider the high performance available. It goes without saying that
the EU 4 standard is complied with. Due to an optimised rear muffler,
the exhaust back pressure was also adapted to harmonize with the
modification. The high-grade steel exhaust system featuring a specially
designed final silencer and an awesome sound worthy of the racetrack,
truly highlight this driving machine's racing car genes. Finally, the
modifications to the engine are complemented by an engine cover boasting
the John Cooper Works lettering. John Cooper Works as a partner within
the production network. The engines - equipped with all special add-on
parts and suspension components built according to customer
specifications - are fitted at the Oxford plant. The assembly of
vehicle-specific components such as the exhaust system and the brakes
is then carried out -under the supervision of John Cooper Works - on the
MINI assembly line at the Oxford plant Those who have already purchased
their new MINI Cooper S and later opt for John Cooper Works power
tuning, can, of course, still have the kit retrofitted. Components,
performance and driving fun are exactly the same. Only the additional
components of this package (sports brake, limited slip differential,
wheels) have to be ordered separately.
