BMW Group Russia and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art are now accepting applications for the second round of the “Art/Tech Grant” in Russia.

The “Garage/BMW: Art/Tech Grant” aims to support new aspiring artists brining IT-technology, engineering and science to their artwork. Each prize recipient will receive monthly grant of 30 000 Ruble and an opportunity to execute his/her project. Moreover, the recipients will be invited to consult with BMW Group technical experts in Munich and visit the Group’s signature landmarks, including the BMW Museum. The Grant is open for artists and art collectives from all across Russia aged 18-35. Participants need to submit an application form accompanied with detailed project information and budget estimate. Execution of the project must take no longer than 12 months.

For BMW Group Russia the cooperation with Garage Museum of Contemporary Art is another step of recognizing the need for institutional support of young artists. Launched in 2015, the BMW Art Journey is a collaboration between Art Basel and BMW, created to recognize and support emerging artists worldwide. This unique award is open to artists who are exhibiting in the Discoveries sector during Art Basel in Hong Kong. A judging panel comprised of internationally renowned experts meet first to select a shortlist of three artists from the sector, who are then invited to submit proposals for a journey aimed to further develop their ideas and artistic work. The jury reconvenes to choose a winner from the three proposals.

Stefan Teuchert, BMW Group Russia CEO, commented: “BMW Group has a long standing commitment to supporting young talents in their inspiring work. In this spirit, we are pleased to announce the second season of the “Garage/BMW: Art/Tech Grant”. We sincerely hope our initiative will create opportunities to make the most ambitious projects come true. I would like to thank the Garage Museum team for being bold and determined to open new horizons for modern and contemporary art in Russia”.

Anton Belov, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art stated: “Thanks to the partnership with the BMW Group Russia, the Art/Tech Grant program got a new departure. By supporting artists working in the field of art & science, we develop not only art, but also technologies”.

The guests of the event enjoyed a headphone concert performed by pianists Arseniy Trofim, Ivan Balev and DJ Evgeniy Kovalenko: modern electronic tracks mashed up with classical music pieces created an extraordinary acoustic illusion. All guests received individual wireless headsets they used to listen to the concert. The public had and exclusive chance to see the new BMW X7 – the first car to offer the presence, exclusivity and spaciousness of a luxury model with the agile and versatile driving properties expected of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

The Grant is open for application from December 10th, 2018 to March 10th, 2019. The application form is available at Garage Museum official website. For background information, please contact the team at:

About BMW Group’s Cultural Commitment

With over 100 projects worldwide, the BMW Group cultural commitment has been an essential part of corporate communications for almost 50 years now. The company places the main focus of its long-term support on modern and contemporary art, jazz and classical music as well as architecture and design. In 1972, three large-scale paintings were created by the artist Gerhard Richter specifically for the foyer of the BMW Group's Munich headquarters. Since then, artists such as Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Daniel Barenboim, Jonas Kaufmann and architect Zaha Hadid have co-operated with BMW. Currently, female artist Cao Fei from China and American John Baldessari are creating the next two vehicles for the BMW Art Car Collection. Besides co-initiatives, such as BMW Tate Live, the BMW Art Journey and the “Opera for All” concerts in Berlin, Munich and London, the company also partners with leading museums and art fairs as well as orchestras and opera houses around the world. Unrestricted freedom of creative potential is of the utmost importance, as it is equally as crucial for the field of art as it is for ground-breaking innovations within a successful business enterprise.

In Russia, the BMW Group has supported the Bolshoi Theatre and selected cultural initiatives for almost 15 years. In June 2018, Moscow witnessed a unique musical event – the festival “BMW Opera for All”, organized by the BMW Group Russia together with the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia. The oldest orchestra in the country – the Bolshoi Theatre Symphony Orchestra, under the guidance of its Chief Conductor and Music Director Tugan Sokhiev, ‒ gave a free, open-air concert in the spectacular setting of Moscow's Theatre Square. In July 2018, the BMW Group Russia presented the first personal exhibition of the world-famous photographer Steve McCurry “The Untold story” at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

Founded in 2008 by Dasha Zhukova and Roman Abramovich, Garage is the first philanthropic institution in Russia to create a comprehensive public mandate for contemporary art. Providing opportunities for dialogue as well as the production of new work and ideas, the Museum’s extensive program of exhibitions, events, education, research and publishing reflects current developments in Russian and international culture. Central to these activities is the Museum’s collection, which is the only public archive in the country related to the development of Russian contemporary art from the 1950s to the present.

The organization was initially housed in (and received its name from) the renowned Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage in Moscow, originally designed by Constructivist architect Konstantin Melnikov. On June 12, 2015, Garage welcomed visitors to its first permanent home. Designed by OMA, this is a groundbreaking preservation project that has transformed the famous Vremena Goda (lit.: seasons of the year) Soviet Modernist restaurant built in 1968 in Gorky Park into a contemporary museum.

The Iris Foundation was founded in 2008 by Daria Zhukova and is a non-profit organization dedicated to promote the understanding and development of contemporary culture.  The Iris Foundation supports all activities of Garage in Russia and all over the world.
