Soshanguve, South Africa – BMW Group South Africa joined the Gauteng Department of Basic Education today to celebrate the handover of a BMW-funded IT centre and library at Ntsha-Peu Primary School in Soshanguve, as well as a R4m upgrade of the school’s facilities.

The investment underlines BMW Group South Africa’s continued commitment to education and to the community in Soshanguve, where so many BMW Group Plant Rosslyn associates live.

As part of the programme, the school has had a new computer lab installed that can accommodate 80 learners at a time, and, in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education, has been supplied with always-on internet. The school will run a robotics and coding programme from the centre.

In addition, a library has been built in a former classroom, ensuring access to books and a quiet space for reading.

To ensure a rounded education for the children, BMW has also funded a multi-sports facility at the school.

Education at the heart of BMW Group SA’s commitment to South Africa

Education, training and skills development are at the heart of BMW Group’s activities in South Africa. In 2018 year the company opened a R73m Training Academy at Plant Rosslyn, and at Midrand head office in April 2019, a brand-new R109m Dealer Training Centre was opened to support our retail network partners.

Additionally, over the course of 2019, BMW Group South Africa is donating 20 BMW X3s to schools, universities and science centres around the country. The first car was handed over to Soshanguve Automotive School of Specialisation in May 2019.

A long-term commitment to Education

Tim Abbott, CEO: BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, said the partnership with the school “shows that we put our money where our mouth is when it comes to a duty of care for the communities around our factory at Rosslyn”.

“There’s a lot of talk about the fourth industrial revolution at the moment, and rightly so. We think this brilliant new facility and the robotics and coding programme will help equip kids for the world they’re going to be stepping into. Perhaps we’ll be lucky enough to have them join us at Plant Rosslyn one day,” Mr Abbott said.
