Midrand – BMW i3 owner and electromobility campaigner Shaun Maidment has found a new calling: the committed electric vehicle (EV) driver is undertaking the rollout of a range of crowdfunded charging stations across South Africa.
Shaun Maidment is an early adopter to electric vehicles and uses his BMW i3 as his primary vehicle for local and longer-distance trips for both business and pleasure. His vision – to see an EV charging station in every small town – was inspired by a five-day road trip from Pretoria to Cape Town in 2018 in his BMW i3, peppered with stops for coffee and rounds of golf.
“This car has changed my life,” says Maidment. “Driving an electric vehicle, for me, is more pleasant and more relaxing. My BMW i3 has allowed me to interact with a broad range of people and change my perception of our country. When you take your time to travel the country and charge wherever you go, since you just need a plug, you get to experience the people of South Africa. Those are also the experiences that have shown me you can rely on others to get things done.”
Now, teaming up with established electromobility partners in South Africa, Maidment and his business partners have launched an electric vehicle charging infrastructure company in South Africa called evCrowdRoute. It already has more than 10 chargers live and has lined up more than 200 sites through partnerships with landlords and innovative businesses.
Maidment and his team plan to sell a portion of their company to raise capital in an equity crowdfunding campaign and have grand plans to help shape the electric vehicle landscape in South Africa. For more info, click here.
