Soshanguve – Tshwane. BMW Group South Africa has intensified its response against the spread of the Coronavirus. The premium vehicle manufacturer unveiled a temporary Covid-19 screening and testing facility at the Soshanguve Block TT Clinic. It comprises an administration area, three examination rooms, a nurses’ station, an isolation room, a storeroom and three ablution facilities.

Long-term and sustainable investments

As part of its sustainable and long-term investments strategy in order to foster pandemic preparedness at community level, this entails a total of 750 beds in nine hospitals and four community health clinics, including Phedisong, Soshanguve Multi-Purpose Centre, Kgabo CHC and KT Motubatse.

An additional two Covid-19 screening and testing centres and a temporary overflow facility at the Bronkhortspruit hospital - with 150 beds with oxygen supply – are also in the pipeline.

Last week, BMW Group South Africa delivered 150 hospital beds to the Dr. George Mukhari Hospital and 200 beds to the Jubilee District Hospital, as part of the total 750 beds.

The ambulance the company donated is in full operation, as well as the three Plant Rosslyn-built BMW X3s. These first responder vehicles are servicing the Ga-Rankuwa, Mabopane and Soshanguve areas.

All the PPE BMW Group South Africa has procured will be distributed to a number of identified hospitals and clinics, to ensure those who are risking their lives to save others are well protected.

“BMW Group South Africa is in the fight against Covid-19 for the long haul. It is encouraging to see our united efforts - together with the Gauteng Department of Health, the South African and the German governments - yielding the necessary results,” said Tim Abbott, CEO: BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

#WeAreUnited

The Soshanguve Block TT Clinic was built in 2003 by the BMW Group South Africa, together with a number of strategic partners. These include SEQUA (a non-profit organisation from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development), the AIDS- Karl Monz Trust, the Gauteng Department of Education, the Gauteng Department of Health, the Tshwane Local Council and the Ikhwezi Trust (a local community organisation.)

BMW Group South Africa has always looked for ways to collaborate with like-minded stakeholders in order to make a positive difference in the lives of various communities.

Earlier this year, the organisation united with the South African Red Cross Society by loaning them 17 mostly Plant Rosslyn-built BMW X3s to fight against the spread of Covid-19.

BMW Group South Africa also partnered with the South African and German governments as they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), in June this year. The much-needed MOU resulted in R76 million being made available to assist in the fight against Covid-19.

More than 40 000 high quality protective respiratory face masks were handed over to one of BMW Group South Africa’s key collaborators: the Gauteng Department of Health. The masks are assisting health workers in their fight to save lives against the dreaded virus.

BMW Group South Africa: building more than just cars

BMW Group South Africa is more than just an employer to the communities surrounding the Rosslyn area. Over the almost 50 years the company has been manufacturing vehicles at Plant Rosslyn, BMW Group South Africa has been knitted into the Soshanguve community’s fabric.

In November last year, as part of a R4 million upgrade to the school’s facilities, the manufacturer refurbished the Ntsha-Peu Primary School in Soshanguve, complete with a computer room, library and new sporting facilities.

As an integral member of the wider Soshanguve public, BMW Group South Africa has supported more than 2000 young children, thanks to its Early Learning Centre. In addition, last year the Group announced its aims to build an entire new school in Ga-Rankuwa.

All of BMW Group South Africa’s investments underline its continued commitment to the community in Soshanguve, where so many of its BMW Group Plant Rosslyn associates live.
