Munich/Goodwood. The superb Goodwood Festival of Speed enters its twelfth
season and features the best of 100 years of motorsport. BMW Mobile Tradition
has been attending the festival since the early 1990s. For 2005, the team led
by Holger Lapp - head of the Munich manufacturer's heritage division - have
come up with something new again. The focus of activities is three decades of
the BMW 3 Series in motor sport. In addition, a number of sporty two-wheelers
from Munich will also be lining up. The 170,000 or so visitors expected to
attend the festival will be able to see spectacular highlights such as the
McLaren BMW F1 GTR, the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Roadster and the latest BMW M6 in
action.
"30 Years of the BMW 3 Series in Motor Sport": an ever-youthful, winning type:
There can't be another car that has proved as successful in motor racing over
the last 30 years as the BMW 3 Series. The last four generations of the sports
saloon raked in countless victories in touring car racing, all the way to the
World Championship title claimed by Roberto Ravaglia in 1987 in a BMW M3. A
separate presskit detailing the history of BMW 3 Series in Motor Sport is
available as download.
Representing the first generation of the BMW 3 Series in motor sport at
Goodwood is the BMW 320 in 1977 BMW Junior Team trim. Swiss motor racing legend
Marc Surer will be back behind the wheel of the 300 bhp car as he was then.
Among Surer's victories with BMW was the 1979 European Formula 2 Championship,
before he moved up to Formula One in the 1980s.
Marc Hessel won the debut race of the new BMW M3 in the 1987 German Touring Car
Championship. Representing it at Goodwood is a Group A-specification BMW M3
from the 1987 season. It was in a comparable car in that same year that Roberto
Ravaglia became the only World Touring Car Champion to date.
In a third-generation BMW 320d, Andreas Bovensiepen will demonstrate that
diesel engines are also quite capable of propelling sporty cars. This diesel
with the foursome Stuck/Duez/Menzel/Bovensiepen taking it in turns at the wheel
claimed overall victory in Germany's most popular endurance race in 1998, the
24 Hour Race at the Nürburgring. In addition to this victory, Bovensiepen took
several class wins at the Nürburgring as well as in Spa.
BMW Motorsport Director Dr Mario Theissen will be steering the latest winner in
the long and successful history of the BMW 3 Series - the current titleholder
in the Nürburgring 24-hour event, the BMW M3 GTR. 500 bhp from a four-litre
engine should suffice to clock a respectable time climbing up the hill in front
of Goodwood House.
BMW is proving equally successfully with the 3 Series in the new FIA World
Touring Car Championship. With the current BMW 320i WTCC and driver Tim Harvey,
a victorious past and a triumphant present come together. Harvey won the 1992
British Touring Car Championship in a BMW 318i, while the BMW 320i WTCC has
already won five of the eight races held so far this year. In 2004, BMW won
with the BMW 320i both Drivers'and Manufacturers' title in the FIA European
Touring Car Championship.
Stepping on the gas at Goodwood: Nico Rosberg in a Formula BMW:
With the Formula BMW race car Nico Rosberg goes back to his motorsport roots.
The latest test driver to join the BMW WilliamsF1 Team, he won the 2002 Formula
BMW ADAC Championship and will thus be driving a Formula vehicle all too
familiar to him. Rosberg: "It's a very special honour for me to be driving here
in Goodwood! I'm also looking forward to being back in a Formula BMW. After
all, I celebrated some major victories in this car and earned a title."
BMW Mobile Tradition's presence at the festival continues with the McLaren BMW
F1 GTR, drawing no less than 633 bhp out of a capacity of 6,064 cc. In 1996 the
car took part in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, and at Goodwood the super sports car
will be driven by Professor Burkhard Göschel. The BMW Board Member responsible
for Development and Purchasing is a longstanding fan of the event organised by
the Earl of March.
A rare example of the company's motor racing activities after the Second World
War is the AFM (Alexander von Falkenhausen, München) from the year 1948. The
engine of the superb BMW 328 with its output of 140 bhp served as a basis for
this car fitted with an aluminium body by Willi Huber. This aesthetic racer
will be driven by Dottore Costantino Franchi, who has made a name for himself
among classic fans as organiser of the Mille Miglia Storica.
The oldest car that BMW is sending out onto the track also brings a dash of
motor sport heritage of a special kind to Goodwood. In the 1940 Mille Miglia,
the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Roadster made it into third place, decisively
contributing to the victory of the BMW squad in the Team classification. 130
bhp, a tubular space frame and an aluminium skin ensure an excellent
power-to-weight ratio and attractive lines. In the driver's seat will be Holger
Lapp, who as Director of BMW Group Mobile Tradition has been the keeper of the
company heritage since 2000.
Present without fail: BMW motorcycles at the Festival of Speed:
As every year, 2005 also features motorcycles from Munich demonstrating the
exciting history of BMW motor sport. This year there are three examples from
the 1930s and 1970s, complemented by a current model with a rather special
history.
Astride the winning motorcycle of the 1939 Hungarian Champion, Endre Kozma,
will be Andrew English. The British journalist will race the BMW R 51 RS with a
36 bhp output from a 494 cc engine. Based on the BMW R 51 production model, the
RS was a typical example of a production racer, 17 of which were presented to
talented young biking stars.
It was only recently that BMW Mobile Tradition managed to acquire the
supercharged BMW RS 500 from its famous previous owner, British motor racing
legend John Surtees. The RS 500 is the same as the works bike with which the
unforgotten Georg ("Schorsch") Meier won the Isle of Man Senior TT in 1939.
Ernst Hiller will be riding the machine at Goodwood. In the 1950s he was an
established private rider and, among other achievements, won four German
Championships on BMW between 1957 and 1962.
From 1972 to 1994, Helmut Dähne took part in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy no
fewer than 26 times. He claimed his greatest success in 1976 when he won the
Production TT on a BMW R 90 S TT. The motorcycle ridden by Dähne, one of whose
current jobs is press spokesman for the tyre company Metzeler, brings 82 bhp
from around a litre's displacement to the Goodwood track.
Long Way Round team takes the quick way up:
Actors, and best friends, Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor will be undertaking
a far less strenuous motorcycle adventure than their recent Long Way Round
trans-global biking adventure, but at a considerably faster average speed. The
biking enthusiasts will ride up the hill at Goodwood astride the BMW R 1150 GS
Adventure motorcycles that saw them safely travel in an easterly direction
around the world from London to New York in the summer of 2004.
Long Way Round (www.longwayround.com), broadcast globally, and now publicised
as a best-selling book and DVD, saw Charley and Ewan taking on the challenge of
language, culture, local bureaucracy, weather and each other's constant company
as they headed through western and eastern Europe, and on into less-travelled
routes through countries such as Kazakhstan and Mongolia. Flooded roads, bad
weather, mapped routes that simply didn't exist, local "colourful" characters,
and an inattentive car driver in the USA did their best to slow down or even
stop the adventure, but Charley, Ewan, the bikes, and help along the way from
the locals ensured that the adventure was completed as planned.
As well as the personal pride generated by the achievement, Long Way Round also
raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities including UNICEF. The
trip's success was highlighted at a charity auction on arrival back in London
when Ewan's bike raised £85,000. Once the ride up the Goodwood hill is
complete, his R 1150 GS Adventure will be heading off to its proud new owner in
the USA, whilst Charley and Ewan plan their next biking adventure.
Extensive exhibition and expert advice:
Beyond the outstanding presence of BMW racing cars and motorcycles on the race
track, BMW will this year again be showing that heritage is more than just high
speed. In the extensive pavilion area of BMW Group Mobile Tradition there will
be experts from the company archive and parts supply department on hand to give
advice and help to the numerous visitors. Both two-wheeler and four-wheeler
fans will be given equal attention when it comes to providing information on
the BMW classics on display. Fans of the brand will also have a chance to
purchase some of the latest gems from the BMW Collection.
The BMW Mobile Tradition pavilion will pay tribute to the theme of "30 Years of
the BMW 3 Series in Motor Sport" with a 1976 BMW 320i Alpina and the winning
car of the 2004 ETCC manned by British driver Andy Priaulx. In addition there
will also be exhibits from the fifties on display: the two birthday cars BMW
507 and BMW Isetta will welcome visitors as warmly as the Holbein HH49, a
Formula 2 racer going back to 1949. Current models from the M range will show
that the fascination of motor sport can also be translated onto the road: the
BMW M5, the brand-new BMW M6 and the BMW M3 CSL will be on display. Motorcycle
exhibits will round off the selection: several examples of the now 25-year-old
yet ever cutting-edge GS series, as well as distinguished classics such as the
BMW RS 500, will be on show in the BMW Mobile Tradition pavilion area for fans
of the BMW brand and interested visitors.
