The trendsetters are entering their second generation: Starting in
mid-October, the BMW 730d and BMW 740d will supplement the model range in the 7
Series introduced recently. Featuring the latest common rail technology, these
new models are continuing the concept of success already defined by BMW:
Power, performance and agility, on the one hand, coupled with comfort and
economy, on the other, have given the diesel a genuine breakthrough in the
luxury performance range, making the BMW 7 Series the benchmark in the world of
high-tech self-igniting power units. Led by the 740d as the world's first
8-cylinder direct-injection diesel saloon, the diesel-powered BMW 7 Series has
progressed very quickly from the connoisseur's choice to a genuine best seller,
accounting for a model mix share between 35 and 85 per cent in the major
European diesel markets.

It is only obvious, therefore, that customers expect a great deal of the new 7
Series diesel. And it is just as obvious that both models will more than
fulfil these expectations: Featuring second-generation common rail fuel
injection and boasting further improvements in many areas, both the six- and
8-cylinder power units offer significant improvements. Maximum output of the
BMW 730d is now 160 kW or 218 bhp at 4,000 rpm, maximum torque is 500 Nm or 369
lb-ft between 2,000 and 2,750 rpm. The BMW 740d, in turn, develops maximum
output of 190 kW or 258 bhp at 4,000 rpm and maximum torque of 600 Nm or 442
lb-ft between 1,900 and 2,500 rpm.

In the interest of optimum and highly efficient power transmission combined
with excellent gearshift comfort, both diesels come for the first time in the
world with the six-speed automatic transmission which already made its debut
in the 735i and 745i, receiving excellent grades in every respect.

The result is truly outstanding performance on the road: The BMW 730d
accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 8.0 seconds and has a top speed of 235 km/h or
146 mph. The 740d accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and reaches a top
speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph. And in this process the new diesel-powered 7
Series make do with fuel consumption of only 8.5 and, respectively, 9.7
litres/100 km in the EU cycle (33.2 and, respectively, 29.1 mpg Imp).

The significant progress offered by both engines will be felt by the customer
particularly in everyday motoring: The engines are once again quieter and more
comfortable, they are significantly more dynamic in their performance, and
thanks to the combination with BMW's outstanding six-speed automatic
transmission, they respond to every movement of the gas pedal with out-
standing agility and performance. In a nutshell, therefore, the new 7 Series
diesels rank right at the top in their competition segments, once again
impressively confirming BMW's competence in diesel technology.

Introducing the 730d and 740d, BMW is now offering all the features of the
innovative 7 Series - whether standard or optional - also in the diesel
segment. As an example, the all-aluminium chassis is also available with BMW's
unique Dynamic Drive active suspension as well as continuously adjustable
Electronic Damper Control (EDC) featured for the first time in the market and
pneumatic suspension with automatic self-levelling at the rear. In their wide
range of standard features both diesel models largely correspond to the
8-cylinder petrol engine versions, and both models come exclusively with the
standard wheelbase of the 7 Series.

CO2 emission information.

The values for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and energy consumption shown were determined in a standardised test cycle according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version currently applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers transmission (automatic or manual) and the different wheels and tyres available on the selected model and may vary during the configuration.

The values of the vehicles labelled with (*), are already based on the test cycle according to the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to allow a comparison between vehicles. More information on the transition from NEDC to WLTP test procedures can be found here.

These figures are intended for comparison purposes and may not be representative of what a user achieves under usual driving conditions. For plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles the figures have been obtained using a combination of battery power and petrol fuel after the battery had been fully charged. Plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles require mains electricity for charging. The CO2 emissions labels are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the Passenger Car (Fuel consumption and CO2 Emissions Information) Regulations 2001, as amended. They are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle.

A guide on fuel economy and CO2 emissions which contains data for all new passenger car models is available at any point of sale free of charge. For further information you can also visit this link.
