BMW is testing a new motorcycle helmet, which is lighter than any other
full-face helmet currently on sale in the UK. It is a sleek and sporty,
carbon-fibre and Kevlar version of the new SportIntegral helmet and weighs less
than 1000 grams. The helmet is being developed in conjunction with riders in
the BMW Motorrad BoxerCup 2003 series and if tests prove successful it will be
on sale next year.

The Carbon SportIntegral helmet has been developed specifically for sports bike
riders and is ideal for motorcycle racers. It has a high cutaway at the rear of
the helmet so that the rider is comfortable in a sports riding position. In
addition, the BMW helmet has excellent aerodynamic qualities as well as a wide
field of vision. The lightness of the helmet is also an extra advantage for
motorcycle racers as it minimises the strain on the rider's neck.

The shell of the helmet is made from an extremely light carbon-fibre material
and lies directly beneath a transparent lacquer coating. The air scoop and rear
spoiler are made from a transparent polycarbonate that channels air to the
eight ventilation openings. The carbon visor consists of a pre-formed
scratch-resistant polycarbonate screen and allows the rider to use tear-offs.

The helmet lining is removable (for washing) and is made of a DuPont Coolmax®
porous synthetic fibre, which absorbs humidity and allows it to evaporate. A
double D-ring clasp fastens the helmet - this is a racing requirement.

BMW's Carbon SportIntegral helmet is ECE 22.05 approved and BMW Motorrad GB
will also be seeking ACU approval so that motorcycle racers can wear the helmet
at all UK racing events.

In 2003 several riders in the BMW Motorrad BoxerCup series will be testing the
Carbon SportIntegral helmet and it is expected that a version will be available
to customers for at a premium price at the end of the year.

Note to editors: the lightest full-face helmet on sale in the UK at present is
the Arashi Tsunami helmet. It weighs 1,290 grams.

CO2 emission information.

The values for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and energy consumption shown were determined in a standardised test cycle according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version currently applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers transmission (automatic or manual) and the different wheels and tyres available on the selected model and may vary during the configuration.

The values of the vehicles labelled with (*), are already based on the test cycle according to the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to allow a comparison between vehicles. More information on the transition from NEDC to WLTP test procedures can be found here.

These figures are intended for comparison purposes and may not be representative of what a user achieves under usual driving conditions. For plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles the figures have been obtained using a combination of battery power and petrol fuel after the battery had been fully charged. Plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles require mains electricity for charging. The CO2 emissions labels are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the Passenger Car (Fuel consumption and CO2 Emissions Information) Regulations 2001, as amended. They are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle.

A guide on fuel economy and CO2 emissions which contains data for all new passenger car models is available at any point of sale free of charge. For further information you can also visit this link.
