Adventure motorcyclists, Kevin and Julia Sanders have set off on their second
Guinness world record attempt. The couple aim to smash the record for riding
the combined length of North and South America in the shortest time, riding a
BMW R1150 GS Adventure.
Today the couple will start their challenge at 8am (local time) from a remote
place called Dead Horse in Alaska inside the Arctic Circle. This location,
specified by Guinness, is a small working town and the couple will set off from
the gates of the local oil field. On their first day they aim to ride 650 miles
over mostly dirt and gravel roads.
"We have been here for three days already," said Kevin, who, along with Julia,
has already broken the Guinness world record for the fastest circumnavigation
of the world by motorcycle. "We have spent our time checking the bike and
becoming acclimatised to the area. We even went for a swim in the Arctic.
"We are basically in the middle of nowhere at the moment. There is plenty of
wildlife around here, including grizzly bears and the road conditions are very
slippery and muddy, with plenty of gravel. The weather is overcast and damp. I
think it is about two degrees Celsius and it's likely to snow at any moment, so
we will definitely have our BMW heated vests on today.
"Our biggest worry is that the next service station is over 240 miles away, so
we could get stranded if something goes wrong, although it is well within the
normal range of a GS Adventure. Julia and I have tried not to think about the
overall trip since we've been here. We are going to take one day at a time and
meet the targets that we have set for ourselves. That is how we will break the
record.
"We will be setting off from the gates of the oil field and our witnesses will
include the security guard and the local sheriff, but before then we will be
indulging in a hearty full English breakfast."
The current Guinness world record for this trip is 47 days and 12 hours. The
Sanders are aiming to complete their 15,200-mile trip in just 37 days. The
couple will tackle some extremely rugged terrain while riding through Alaska,
Canada, USA, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama,
Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile and Tierra del Fuego.
