The BMW Education Programme website has achieved the highest internet
accessibility standard in preparation for the new disability guidelines
effective from 1 October 2004.
One aim of the Disability Discrimination Act is to increase access to services
for disabled people. www.bmweducation.co.uk is a valuable tool for all
students and teachers wishing to learn more about road safety, clean energy and
the company and it is important that the site is accessible to all visitors.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has developed standards for the three
levels of access. Achieving the highest level of Priority three is a major
project for any website and many companies are still working towards Priority
one as an initial step.
Rosemary Davies, public relations manager for BMW, said: "As an education
resource, we felt it was vital for the website to meet the highest
accessibility level as soon as possible and therefore we gave ourselves the
goal of jumping straight to Priority three. In fact, the process has helped us
make the website design better for all users."
Each page on the BMW Education Programme website has been analysed and
rewritten to comply with the new standards, and a final check for access was
carried out by an independent, visually disabled user. One example of the new
layout means that for users with special reader equipment, a computer-generated
voice will read the text and describe the images on the screen.
www.bmweducation.co.uk has been operational since 2001 and has reached a peak
of over 1.4 million visitors in some months. As well as helping on school
projects, the website actively encourages students to learn more about road
safety issues and offers teacher support by following the national curriculum
guidelines. The material available suits young pupils in primary schools
through to mature university students. In 2003, the website won an
International Visual Communications (IVCA) gold award for its innovative
CleanEnergy education programme.
