BMW factory rider John Deacon was tragically killed yesterday while competing
as a privateer in the 2001 Master Rallye.
Details are unclear as to the cause of the accident, but the 10 times British
Enduro champion and regular Paris Dakar competitor is thought to have fallen
heavily during a special stage on day seven of the event. A medical helicopter
arrived quickly at the scene but the rider had already passed away.
"It is a tragic loss," said BMW's Motorcycle Manager David Taylor. "I feel most
for John's family and my heart goes out to his wife and two children.
"John had been part of the BMW family for several years. He was a remarkable
man who craved adventure and loved racing. He exuded talent and charisma, and
is a true legend in the motorcycle industry. He will always be remembered."
John leaves a wife Tracey and two children, James and Zoe.
