1.BMW at the 2004 NAIAS:

World Debut of the BMW 645Ci -
the Dream Convertible joining the Dream Coupe.

Munich/Detroit. Virtually no car enthusiast will be able to ignore this
seductive outlook at summer - especially in the cold winter season in Detroit:
the BMW 645Ci Convertible is making its world debut as a four-seater open-air
dream car of the highest calibre. And it is being introduced just four months
after its sister Coupe, which is also appearing at the 2004 Detroit Show.

In addition to reinstating and expanding a brand segment traditional to the
Company with the launch of the 6 Series, BMW's new X3 is entering the SAV
(Sports Activity Vehicle) segment in exactly the right position below the X5.

Indeed, this youngest member of the BMW X family is also highlighted here in
Detroit as is the updated X5 and the new top-of-the-range X5 4.8is.

World debut: the BMW 645Ci Convertible with fin-structure roof:
With the introduction of the open-air 645Ci, BMW is proudly presenting a truly
unique version of the 6 Series tailor-made for the aficionado of open-air
motoring - an outstanding new car with BMW's innovative fin-design softtop.
This special name comes from the harmonious body section at the rear, where the
soft roof follows the contour lines of a solid C-pillar. In between these
sail-like fins, a vertical rear window offers the driver excellent visibility
to the rear regardless of weather conditions.

A special feature is that the rear window opens and closes electrically like a
side window, providing draft-free air extraction from the interior.

Superior driving comfort for four adults:
A fully-fledged 2+2-seater convertible, the 645Ci Convertible offers all
passengers excellent seating comfort, luxurious leather upholstery, and an
ambience of true elegance. Compared to the usual conditions in a convertible,
the rear-seat passengers enjoy all the comfort of sitting in front. Although
the roof follows a low Coupe-like line, adults will enjoy adequate headroom in
the rear seats. Enjoying the comfort of two deeply contoured, separate leather
seats with contoured backrests, both rear passengers have the benefit of
excellent side support. At the same time, trunk capacity of 300 litres(10.6 cu
ft) with the roof open and 350 litres (12.4 cu ft) with the roof closed,
maximizes the practical value of this new Convertible which easily accommodates
one large and one small hard-shell suitcase or, respectively, two 46-inch golf
bags and a medium-sized hard-shell case.

With the through-loading system and ski-bag, the driver and his passengers can
also take along two pairs of skis or a snowboard, without impairing seat space
in any way.

Convertible and Coupe: Body and chassis in intelligent lightweight technology:
A driving experience that lives up to the looks of the car: Both the open-air
and fixed-roof versions of the BMW 645Ci offer sheer driving pleasure of the
highest calibre. Outstanding driving comfort combined with equally outstanding
dynamics - this is the result of intelligent lightweight technology enhanced to
the highest level and used consistently throughout the car - a concept borne
out in particular by the innovative aluminium/steel/plastic hybrid structure of
the body. The front side panels and the trunk lid, for example, as well as the
roof compartment cover on the convertible, are all made of high-quality
synthetic materials, while the front section, the hood and the doors are
crafted out of aluminium.

It almost goes without saying that the state-of-the-art chassis and suspension
of the new 6 Series are also made of light alloy. Both vehicles have all the
most advanced and sophisticated electronic control systems one would expect
from BMW such as Dynamic Stability Control(DSC) with DTC Dynamic Traction
Control (DTS) adding the final touch. Optional extras available in this area
are the 'intelligent' Dynamic Drive suspension system (this is called Active
Roll Stabilization in the US) which compensates for body sway in bends almost
completely and BMW's unique Active Steering which provides more direct
transmission ratio at low speeds and an indirect ratio at high speeds.

V8 power unit for dynamic driving pleasure:
The power unit of the BMW 645Ci is a prize-winner in every respect: This is the
'International Engine of the Year 2002', the 4.4-litre 8-cylinder BMW featuring
BMW's unique fully-variable VALVETRONIC valve management. Maximum output of 245
kW/333 (325 in the US) bhp and maximum torque of 450 Newton-meters/332 lb-ft
guarantee effortless performance and power under all conditions.

Both the Convertible and the Coupe have a top speed limited electronically to
250 km/h (155 mph).The fixed-roof 645Ci equipped with BMW's manual six-speed
gearbox accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 5.6 seconds and the
Convertible in just 6.1 seconds.

The world's first compact Sport Activity Vehicle: the BMW X3:
The X5 comes from the States, the X3 goes to the States: BMW is launching its
new Sports Activity Vehicle in the USA in 2004. The new BMW X3 combines all the
agility of a compact BMW with the supreme driving experience of the BMW X5.

Simple facts and figures alone prove the unique position of this outstanding
model series: Measuring 4565 millimetres or 179.7'' in length, the X3 is 87
millimetres or 3.4'' longer than the 3 Series Sport Wagon, but almost 30
centimetres or 11.8'' shorter than the new 5 Series Sedan. And it is also
shorter than the X5 measuring 4,667 mm or 183.7'' from bumper to bumper.

Superior performance is ensured by six-cylinder power units, a six-speed
gearbox and BMW's new, electronically controlled xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
A high and commanding seating position, in turn, ensures a very special driving
experience further enhanced by the generous feeling of space and the modern
equipment featured in this compact SAV. The new X3 is entering the US market in
two model variants - as the X3 3.0i developing maximum output of 170 kW (231bhp
? 225 hp in the US) and as the X3 2.5i with maximum engine power of 141 kW (192
bhp - 184 hp in the US).

xDrive: intelligent all-wheel-drive featured in the X3 and X5:
A particular highlight of the BMW X3 and the X5 is the newly developed,
intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system setting new standards in agility for
all-wheel-drive vehicles. The core element featured in this system is the
electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch for infinite, fully variable
distribution of drive forces front-to-rear. The system immediately recognizes
the need to change the distribution of power and responds extremely quickly and
efficiently when driving on-road, usually before any of the wheels lose
traction on the surface.

As a result, the BMW X3 and X5 run like on rails even under adverse road
conditions with the DSC stability control only being required to engage much
later than with other drive concepts. This driving pleasure is enhanced by an
even higher standard of driving safety since xDrive is combined with HDC Hill
Descent Control, an intelligent control system for steep downhill gradients, as
well as BMW's unique trailer stability control.

The BMW X5: a genuine performer now with even more punch:
Thoroughly updated from front to rear, the highly successful BMW X5 is now
entering the year 2004 in its 'home country' with an even higher standard of
all-round excellence. The highlights of this model update are the new,
intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system, new and even more powerful engines
extending all the way up to the new top-of-the-range X5 4.8is, and design
features with even more striking looks and quality.

The most prominent example of this new design is the front end of the BMW X5,
which has been thoroughly updated all the way to the A-pillars. The
characteristic contours of the engine compartment lid, typical of BMW's
X-models are now more stylish, expressing even more dynamic power and
performance through BMW's new design language with its convex and concave
surfaces.

Yet another new design feature is the kidney-shaped layout of the air intakes,
the vertical rods in the grille now featuring the wave-shaped profile so
characteristic of a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle. The front air dam also comes
in a more powerful and striking design together with larger air intake scoops
split down the middle, with the character lines on the engine compartment lid
appearing to flow all the way down to the bottom.

The bumper now merges smoothly into the headlights, while at the rear, new tail
lights in clear-glass look round off the fresh appearance of the new BMW X5
with a touch of elegant harmony.

The BMW X5 4.8is - the new top model setting a new standard in dynamic
performance motoring:
The top model in the updated X5 series is the new BMW X5 4.8is: Following a
significant boost in engine power, the V8 high-performance power unit develops
maximum output of 265 kW or 360 bhp, virtually rocketing the X5 4.8is to 100
km/h (62 mph) in about 6 seconds. The starting point in this development
process was BMW's new V8 power unit featuring VALVETRONIC valve control,
dual-VANOS, as well as the fully variable intake system also featured in the
new BMW 645Ci.

The high-performance power unit developed exclusively for the X5 on this basis
is boosted in capacity to 4.8 litres (293 cu in) and features significant
modifications on the intake and exhaust system as well as the engine management
unit.

As in the past, the short but sweet and powerful designation "is" on the new
BMW X5 4.8is clearly emphasizes that this very special version of the X5 is the
absolute leader not only in terms of power and engine capacity, but also in its
spectacular range of equipment, exclusive colours and materials, as well as
discreet, sporting design features setting this model clearly apart from the
'other' versions of the BMW X5.

BMW Group continuing to grow substantially in the US market:
The US market is key to the BMW Group, and has become the best-selling BMW
region worldwide in 2003 surpassing even the home market of Germany. And this
is actually no surprise, considering that BMW brand sales have more than
quadrupled here since 1991. In terms of sales figures, BMW is indeed among the
top two in the premium market. With the US market playing a leading role for
innovative concepts such as Sports Utility (SUVs) and Multi-Purpose Vehicles
(MPVs), growth in these segments has been far more dynamic for a number of
years than in the overall market. And here, too, the driving force is BMW with
the outstanding X5.

MINI is also an outstanding performer in the US market following its launch in
the States in March 2002.

The smallest car in a market now dominated by so-called 'light trucks', the
MINI was delivered to almost 25,000 customers in the USA in its very first
year, despite the fact that the brand was hardly known in the USA at the
beginning. Then, 1½ years after its launch, MINI broke the 50,000 mark in US
sales in September 2003.

The BMW X3 will be introduced in the US in early 2004, followed in the spring
by the 6 Series Coupe and Convertible. The MINI Convertible will also be
entering the US market in the course of this year.

In the mean term, the BMW Group is looking at an increase in its current market
share from approximately 1.5 to a minimum of 2 per cent.

CO2 emission information.

The values for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and energy consumption shown were determined in a standardised test cycle according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version currently applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers transmission (automatic or manual) and the different wheels and tyres available on the selected model and may vary during the configuration.

The values of the vehicles labelled with (*), are already based on the test cycle according to the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to allow a comparison between vehicles. More information on the transition from NEDC to WLTP test procedures can be found here.

These figures are intended for comparison purposes and may not be representative of what a user achieves under usual driving conditions. For plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles the figures have been obtained using a combination of battery power and petrol fuel after the battery had been fully charged. Plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles require mains electricity for charging. The CO2 emissions labels are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the Passenger Car (Fuel consumption and CO2 Emissions Information) Regulations 2001, as amended. They are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle.

A guide on fuel economy and CO2 emissions which contains data for all new passenger car models is available at any point of sale free of charge. For further information you can also visit this link.
