The world’s most sustainable car company continues to clean up

BMW is still the UK’s leading premium car manufacturer with the lowest average CO2 emissions according to an independent industry-wide study. Research from the www.cleangreencars.co.uk  shows BMW now has a fleet average of just 147g/km CO2. This is an improvement of five per cent on the previous year’s figures and the largest positive change in the premium sector. BMW launched EfficientDynamics in 2007 and has been the premium manufacturer CO2 champion every year since.

However, that is just part of the story as BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies lower emissions without compromising performance. So not only is the BMW fleet average CO2 and combined fuel consumption figure of 50.4mpg the best in class, but year on year BMW has increased the average power output to enhance driving pleasure – the 2010 figure was 182bhp.

To put these impressive achievements in perspective Audi, BMW’s closest premium competitor, averages 152g/km CO2, 48.2mpg and 168bhp. Mercedes records 174g/km, 41.6mpg and 183bhp respectively while Jaguar bucks the trend with its emissions and fuel consumption rising to 201g/km with combined fuel consumption of 37.7mpg and output at 279bhp.

To underscore the level of achievement BMW is broadly equivalent to Nissan, a manufacturer of generally much smaller capacity vehicles, when it comes to its CO2 emissions and fuel economy. The Japanese firm recorded an average CO2 figure of 145g/km, and 48.4mpg.  However, in stark contrast Nissan’s average power output of 107bhp, is 75hp less than BMW.

It was BMW’s year on year development of efficient engines, engineering expertise and commitment to sustainability that helped it to be named the mobility partner of the London 2012 Olympics in 2009.  BMW was the only automotive manufacturer to fulfil and even exceed the 25 per cent CO2 reduction commitment in 2008.  This dedication has also been recognised by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, which named BMW the most sustainable car company in the world for the sixth time in 2010.

BMW proclaimed Fleet Manufacturer of the Year at Fleet News awards 2011

Renowned industry publication, Fleet News, has honoured BMW naming it Fleet Manufacturer of the Year at the annual Fleet News Awards.  BMW fought off strong competition to take home the top accolade, trumping its industry rivals on operating costs, fleet support and product attributes, as voted for by the magazine’s readers. 

Fleet News also gave the Best Boardroom Car award to the BMW 5 Series Saloon. It was commended for being a car that you choose with your head and your heart thanks to its blend of strong performance and low CO2, with the use of EfficientDynamics technology.  To conclude a successful night BMW picked up a further three awards; the BMW 5 Series Touring won Best Estate Car; the BMW X3 was awarded Best SUV and the BMW 3 Series took home the gong for the Best Premium Car.
