The BMW 318d ES Saloon has once again fought off strong competition to be crowned Best Executive Car at the What Car? Green Car Awards 2011.

The BMW 318d Saloon is one of BMW’s most fuel efficient and least polluting models.  It records a combined consumption figure of 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 119g/km, while at the same time is capable of a zero to 62mph time of 9.1 seconds. It was the blend of these impressive performance figures combined with innovative EfficientDynamics technologies that ensured the parsimonious 3 Series model took the top green honour.

Chas Hallett, What Car? Editor in Chief said: “The BMW 318d ES qualifies for the lowest, 13 per cent, company car tax band for diesel cars and can average 62.8mpg. It also costs a measly £30 a year to tax. It is equipped with a great 2.0-litre diesel engine that pulls strongly, and it offers a great premium driving experience. It grips strongly and has excellent poise.”

News of another high profile award for BMW comes as independent research has revealed BMW is still the UK’s leading premium car manufacturer with the lowest average CO2 emissions.  Research from www.cleangreencars.co.uk shows BMW now has a fleet average of just 142g/km CO2, an improvement of almost five per cent on the previous year’s figures. In 2007 BMW launched EfficientDynamics, fitting many of the technologies in all of its models, and has been the premium manufacturer CO2 champion every year since.

To put these impressive achievements in perspective Audi, BMW’s closest premium competitor, averages 145g/km CO2, while Mercedes records 163g/km and Jaguar 197g/km.

It was BMW’s consistent development of efficient engines, engineering expertise and commitment to sustainability that helped it to be named the mobility partner of the London 2012 Games in 2009.  BMW was also the only automotive manufacturer to fulfil and even exceed the 25 per cent European CO2 reduction commitment in 2008.

BMW named most sustainable car manufacturer for seventh consecutive year by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index

BMW’s dedication to sustainability has again been recognised by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, which has named BMW the most sustainable car company in the world for the seventh consecutive year.  Since its inception BMW is the only automotive organisation to have featured every year on the index, which is the leader in obtaining an accurate like-for-like analysis of companies

CO2 emission information.

The values for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and energy consumption shown were determined in a standardised test cycle according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version currently applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers transmission (automatic or manual) and the different wheels and tyres available on the selected model and may vary during the configuration.

The values of the vehicles labelled with (*), are already based on the test cycle according to the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to allow a comparison between vehicles. More information on the transition from NEDC to WLTP test procedures can be found here.

These figures are intended for comparison purposes and may not be representative of what a user achieves under usual driving conditions. For plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles the figures have been obtained using a combination of battery power and petrol fuel after the battery had been fully charged. Plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles require mains electricity for charging. The CO2 emissions labels are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the Passenger Car (Fuel consumption and CO2 Emissions Information) Regulations 2001, as amended. They are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle.

A guide on fuel economy and CO2 emissions which contains data for all new passenger car models is available at any point of sale free of charge. For further information you can also visit this link.
